Centre diff warning light problem

Hi there guys, I have a warning light coming on intermittently when starting. It stops me from using the cruise control, and I am told it could be oil gunge on the fingers in the transfer case or a dodgy servo.
Anybody got any ideas?

Can you turn the centre diff on and off ?

No. When I try to engage, disengaging is very difficult. One time a mechanic had to put it up on a hoist (wheels of the ground) to get it to disengage.
