Hi Dennis
I think The National Trust would have got rid any fun to be had in a car.
I've been going there for walking hols for thirty years and I can't remember
any formal green lanes, which doesn't mean that they aren't there, just that
they are hiding from The National Trust Meister's. Wainwright's walking
books would show up tracks in the valley's, or just Google it for an answer.
The Lake District isn't really rugged anymore, it's all comfy tea shops for
the pink rinser's.
My only suggestion might be to look in the large area of land between
Keswick and Carlilse using the A591. After you officially leave the Lake
District the land is much more barren, much less twee.
Good luck

Older people who hang out in tea shops and stately homes, no offence
intended to older people, of course.
