Colorado Head

Hi All,
Just put the Colorado in to get the head gasket done, mechanic called last
night to say there were cracks in the head which run towards the valves,
although he does not think into the water jacket?
Heads away to get pressure tested, right now I'm gutted as I assume this
could be costly.
Anyone had similar problems?, with the symptoms I had thought a simple head
gasket change was on the cards.
Cheers

Derek,
Not sure about your type of engine, but 1HDT lumps do ocassionally
develop cracks which make little difference to engine integrity. Don't
panic, have it tested and see what happens.
Why did you decided to change the head gasket?

Hi Derek,
Sorry to say extremely common and is often caused by not servicing the
injectors regularly enough the spray pattern becomes wide and overheats
the precombustion chamber area. Very likely you will need a new head,
they are very cheap in NZ, I think about 300-400 pounds if they are much
dearer in the uK I will get you a current price here.
If it checks OK get a hardness test done to. Make sure it is pressure
tested with the cam caps on and torqued up as I have seen them leak this
way but not with them off.
Make sure you get your injectors serviced.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Have a look on the Surf forum for confirmation of this. Sorry no correlation between the 4 cyl engines and the much more robust 6cyl diesel lumps
My 3.0 litre 4Runner did exactly the same thing. Cracked between valves on No 4 cyl. Compression was pressurising the cooling system and steam was coming out of the exhaust pipe. Mileage was about 127,000. I had no history of overheating prior to this.
Don't bother trying to get the head repaired this is very seldom successful.
Loads of new heads on ebay. Change belt and tensioner as well.
We whipped the engine out completely and changed the whole clutch at the same time, just as well as it had little left on the friction plate.
It cost me approx =A31200 in parts and labour.
Good luck.

HI Roman,
1HD-T & 1HD-FT heads are pretty bullet proof
1KZ-TE heads are very prone to cracking and when they do they are
usually a right off.

Hi Craig,
Thanks for the info, I'll speak to the mechanic tomorrow and make sure he
tells the tester to check this.
The only price I have just now is from Milners, their price list shows
?610.00 plus vat & carriage, that seems steep!!
The car was serviced regularly from the local main dealer until approx. 1
year ago, I kept up the service with the local guy, although he is not a
main dealer.
Looking on the worst side any help you can give with better prices would be
greatly appreciated.
Regards
Derek

Roman,
Engine type I believe is KZJ90, the mechanic has said that the cracks may be
ok, but I must admit he did not install much confidence.
The reason the head gasket was getting done was it was smoking quite a bit,
was loosing some water, admittedly not much oil, I was told this almost
certainly points to the gasket which I duly ordered.

Derek

Gareth,
Exactly the same position on this head, I'll wait to the test comes back
before what seems to be the inevitable.
Mines has just covered 140'000, again no history of overheating.
I'll check e-bay as other options seems very expensive.
I had already ordered the belt but not the tensioner, this should definitely
be replaced?

Derek

Hi Derek,
Engine type is 1KZTE indirect injection (that is the main reason they
kill heads versus the 1 HD-T's direct injection) 3L 4cyl electronic
injection 4 cylinder. The head gaskets are graded so make sure you get
the same one or even better double check the piston protusion and get
the correct one that way.
The loseing water say's it all the head will be stuffed. Hopefully this
has not been going on for too long otherwise the water as it turns to
steam tends to eat the top of the cast iron bore making it look a bit
like sponge rubber.
This almost certainly does NOT point towards a head gasket failure. The
laminated steel headgaskets that Toyota uses virtually never blow. 90+%
of the time when a person thinks they have blown a head gasket on a
toyota diesel it is a cracked head. Extremely rarely a block will crack
and even more rarely a gasket will leak (usually because the head was
not tightened down properly and left loose).
Regards,
Craig.

Hi Derek,
I don't know about the UK but in NZ dealers tend to ignore the injectors
and very rarely service them. I find it is cheap insurance to fit a
fresh set of injector nozzles every 100,000km and that way you are
unlikely to ever have a head failure caused by a worn injector.
Regards,
Craig.

As I said in my earlier post we whipped the engine out and checked the clutch. Good job to as it was less than one mm from the rivets, mileage was 125,000.
With the head off you are half way to removing the engine and with 140,000 miles on the clock I would be changing the clutch, you can sort this out while waiting for a new head.
I fully agree with Craig about servicing injectors.
Sadly locally to me I have yet to find anyone who I trust for this job.
Regards Gareth Jones.

Thanks to all who replied to the problems with the Colorado head.
I have eventually found something reasonably priced.
Regards
Derek
