correction bushes, steering box, damper, loads

Hi Guys
I have beeen slowly building up bits for the cruiser that I want to put on
it, or should I say get put on it.
This is why I have a few questions.
I just received the OME steering damper and looked at it and the one under
the belly of the cruiser.
Now the one on the cruiser looks smaller as it should but it looks longer
than the new one so I am assuning the new one will pull out.
I tried but failed to pull it out futherwith both hamds, must be old age or
maybe im a big girls blouse.
I then discovered if the wheels are turned on the cruiser the damper slides
into itself, and hey presto , now I know.
I looked again and saw that there is only two bolts holding on the damper
but one is hard to get at but is attached to a plate with two bolts.
Can I open the two plate bolts and the other bolt at the other end of the
damper and then open the remaining damper bolt without other things falling
apart on me.
Will the other new damper simply just go back into place or will there be
all sorts of terrible complcations.
I now have a set of correction bushes and wondered if this is a job for Toy
raher than a mechanic guy in his own workshop.
I also managed to sourse a full set of seals for the steering box for $74
Aus which compareed to Mr Toy wanting more than 170 euro was good value I
think.
I still have my Walbro pump that still needs fitting and was only reminded
of this fact when the terrible vibrations came back with a vengence
yesterday for no reaon at all and the cruiser felt like an out of control
washing machine with one leg missing on a spin.
While looking at the TV I saw that the British Army are to get new vehicles
to replace the LR soon. They will be larger then the old LR, amour plated,
must weigh a lot and according to the report be able to carry more than 3
ton. It only has a 2.5 diesel engine or as the presenter said a powerful 2.5
engine.
Now if this machine has a 2.5 engine and able to carry over 3 ton over all
terrains like ditches etc why with our 4.2 engine is the carrying ability
only 3/4 of a ton. Is it because the engines are old world or the body cant
handle the weight or the suspension is not able to cope.
Im interested to know cause I still have that thing about the 18 whellers
being able to caryy or pull 40 or 50 ton with an engine of 12 or 16 litres.
And the fact that the expensive engines on the trucks use a sideways air
intake and we are told to use an air intake to the front.
Ah its all too much ill have to get a cuppa.
cheers

John,
2.5Tdi and 3 tons of armour always sounded like a bit of a joke. At
Billing someone told me that apparently in Afghanistan the army has
reconaissance vehicles fitted with 4.2 Toyota engines. They are not
LRs but the proper spaceframe type vehicles.
Our lCs are speced for less than three tons because we prefer to keep
them for a while and can afford more sympathy for them than the
squaddies.
You forgot about those pointed upward and downward :)

All depends on a) how fast you want to accelerate b) how fast you want to
go.
Anyone remember the the 3.5L petrol discovery towing a train, derived from 2
1/4 LR used in Kenya on the railway lines?

Hi John,
They should both extend and compress to the same lengths.
I suspect the latter.
Yes. Undo the bolt on one end and the plate on the other. Once you have it
off you can take off the plate seperately.
From memory it does help to have something like a ball joint remover to get the
plate off (http://tinyurl.com/pjzjs) if it is stiff.
Depends on who made it. If OME it should just go straight on.
The key thing is to find someone with a hydraulic press and make sure you take
the measurements properly before fitting. I think there may be some additional
info on the LCool site about that.
This will mostly come down to bondy design and gearing although our 4.2s are
very under powered - a modern 2.5 will have probably the same output.
On the gearing side they are probably geared for a top speed of 70-80mph
whereas the 80 can do 110-120mph - the lower gearing will provide more power -
think of a tractor -similar sized engine to us, but a lot more pulling power.
Also the body, chassis and suspension, etc on the 80 is more geared up to
comfort rather than load carrying - the army kit will most likely be more
substantial.
Confused.

Hi guys
Thanks for the reply. Julian are you saying that if I put a modern 2.5
engine in
the cruiser it would perform aswell or as poorly as the case may be.
And obviously it would be lighter on fuel or would it.
It would be lighter on the road tax over here thats for sure, a saving of
about 700 euro i think.
But I dought you would get that same powerful beautifull sound from all six
cylinders firing.
Gareth thanks for the offer again, geese you are a gluten for punisment.
Ah just hypetetical questions at times .
cheers

A Nissan Navara has 2.5TD has almost output power and torque as the Toyota
2F 4.2L straight 6 petrol. They only seem to last around 100K miles, based
on failure of one of our three at 80K, mostly motorway usage and a bloke who
has rebuilt 15 in the last year. I am told the new engines are better, I
think that means the 3L that in the Pathfinder.
Fuel consumption is around 22 mpg at best can drop to 18 mpg, suspension is
bouncy, watched a Hilux Surf in convoy with a Navara, Navara body reacted to
bumps that the Toyota didn't even see.

Hi John,
It really depends on the engine you put in there, but in reality you
would never waste your money on it.
Far better to upgrade to a 24 valve 4.2 (1HD-FT), slap on an intercooler,
bigger turbo, bigger exahaust and go off and have some more fun ;-))
