Cruise control issue

I had to go to Bristol last night and the cruise control initially
worked for a minute or so on the flat, but going up a hill at 70 mph it
suddenly dropped out, the green "cruise" light flashed 4 times and then
went out completely, and thereafter it refused to work at all: no light,
no nothing.
After an intermediate stop in Taunton at which the ignition was turned
off the "cruise" light came back on again when requested, but the system
dropped out immediately with flashes as before when I tried to use it.
On the way back from Bristol it all worked fine.
I've checked both fuses and for any obvious mechanical damage, and it
all looks fine to me, so I'm hypothesising that maybe it was the cold
which stopped it working initially, and the run up the motorway was
enough to thaw it all out. Perhaps the cable got a bit iced up and
asked too much torque of the system or something.
Has anyone any experience of this, or any advice to offer? For example
should I be lubricating cables, and if so - how?
Sorry, I realise this is a bit less mission-critical and exciting than
new diffs and gearboxes, but all thoughts gratefully received!

Thanks, I'd forgotten about those. I've downloaded the first two so I'll
take a look... pages BE 103 - 126 seem relevant.
I *think* it was four flashes, but at 70mph on the motorway one can't
really stop to look! Perhaps it was 5. I'll do some stationary
diagnostics and see what it has to say for itself.

| Hi Christopher,
|
| RM184E has a short section on the cruise control and how to get the
error
| code. RM315E has a bit more. Those are both on mudtoys (links in
previous
| emails).
|
| RM434E has a couple of pages and RM534E has 55 pages on the cruise
| control! If the problem returns so that you can diagnose it i'll scan
| those because now I've looked at it there is all sorts of interesting
| information about other things like the imoboliser that seems to crop
up
| from time to time.
|
| I'd do a dummy run on getting an error code and wait for it to happen
| again.

Too true! I use it as a matter of course now in those.
Incidentally having read through the diagnostic check list the very
first entry was "excessive clutch or motor current", which pretty much
points to the "frozen up requiring too much torque" scenario.
I think I'll do a bit of cleaning followed by oil and grease squirting
and hope it stays OK.

This happens me all the time when in cruise control going up a long
steep hill - the cruise control can't catch up with the power required
to get me up the hill.
I've never tried fix it - just assumed it was a nuiance of the cruise
control in a cruiser.
On the subject of cruise control - I don't use mine any more because
I'm convinced continued use of it buggers up the drive train - UJ's
and the like. When you hit the brake when in cruise the drive train
takes an awful wallop. It's OK once and a while but when on a long
trip the wallops add up.
As technical as ever

Niall,
From where does this wallop come from?, the first thing that happens
when you brake with CC on is that CC dissengages. Any torque you feel is
caused by the fact that you do not have your foot on the accelerator to keep
up the engine speed, so you feel the car going in to normal engine braking.

If your speed drops more than 5mph below the set speed then it is
designed to disengage, so I think you need more power or less ambition!
In my case it didn't just disengage but actually turned itself
completely off and refused to come back on again until the ignition had
been cycled off/on.
You are right about the shunts to the drive-train during rapid
disengagement, and I try to avoid that. When I'm going up steep hills
on cruise I tend to floor the accelerator - partly to give it the best
chance of maintaining speed, and partly to avoid that shunt if it does
decide to disengage.
BTW I found that the slop in my drive-line was *hugely* reduced when I
replaced the front CV joints, it made a really remarkable difference.

If you hit the brakes or clutch the CC disengages immediately, and the
effect is identical to lifting your foot rapidly off a well depressed
accelerator. On mine this gives a real shunt through the transmission,
although I suspect that my manual box will accentuate this more than an
auto one would.
To drive mine smoothly, cruise control or no, you need to lift off the
accelerator in a smooth fashion.
