I'm in the High Wycombe area (south bucks) adn deperately need info on
reliable and dependable MOT shops (not the kind who would rip you off
and tell you you have to replace bits that don't need replacing).
Anyone in the area with some experience?

Jake I am just over the hill from you and find the same problem in the
area. There appear to be no specialist all-makes 4WD garages who also do
MoT's and would be fair about it. You have to go into more rural areas to
find them.
But Roman is right, they should just do the test without any favour and the
report sheet should show technicalities of any failure. Roy Chapman in
Berkhamsted did my Pajero and they have enough work with Mazda and Citroen
to bother spannering an aged 4WD. They only rejected a slightly weeping
brake line banjo washer. Soon fixed by removing and annealing it and
putting it back on.
If your car is in good nick then there should be no problem. Just make sure
the lights all work - including the dash lights for fog lamps etc: all
brake hoses are good: all wheel bearings are good and tight: lamp lenses
comply with UK requirements (they have an 'E' number on them): you have
thrashed the engine just before you take it in to ensure it is not smoking
or likely to chuck out any soot from the silencer - also put some additive
in the fuel and maybe even fill-up with BP ultimate: and make sure that the
pedal rubbers have moulded ribs right across them - a common failure point!
And you have put a rear fog light on haven't you?
Can offer no more help, but if you find a good place please let us all know?
Cheers
