CV-joints vs. AIR-Locker

I'm thinking about fitting AIR-Lockers on my 80, both Front and Rear,
but a friend of mine said that I was "crazy" to use the money, as I
would not be able to really use the Front locker without killing the
CV-Joints..
Well.. and I just wanted to hear if any of you have any experience in
that department?

Hi Michael,
As you know the 80s were fitted with front lockers on most models as
standard so they are more than capable of running with them.
For other vehicles like Land Rovers, etc, where lockers aren't fitted
at the factory I wouldd be more concerned.
When using the front locker you soon know if your CVs need replacing
because they are put under a lot of pressure and make a lot more noise
than usual but they only break if already severly knackered or severely
abused.
It should also be noted that the CVs were designed to be the weak point
in the drive train so that if anything breaks it should be the CV
first, which are relatively cheap and easy to replace, instead of the
Diff exploding or transfer case, etc.

Well I replaced my CVs last summer.. so.. the should be in good shape ;)
Talking about CVs are the standard Toyota CVs the best choice?
Thank you for your input :D ... I think I will go' ahead an install the
lockers..

Well.. benefit.. more traction.. to get you out of trouble (now I have

lock the diffs should improve traction significantly.
The first offer I have received With 2 ARB-AIR-Lockers ARB-Compressor
new side-bearings and and all the installation done by the shop (I don't
have to lift a finger), will cost me around 2700euro.. It is a first
offer.. and not the price ;)

Hi Michael,
As far as I can tell the cheaper ones just don't last as long.
If you are going to be doing some serious rock crawling it is possible
to get even stronger ones from the US, but then you run the risk of
other stuff breaking.
The key thing is to make sure that they are well maintained. Ideally
you should strip down and repack the CVs and wheel bearings ever 20-30k
miles - something the dealers down't even bother touching unless they
are broken.

Here's a thought.
I have a standard UK spec 80 with factory lockers front and rear. I
don't do rock-climbing or "recreational" off-roading, but I do end up in
a fair amount of mud from time to time.
I've found that the most common way of getting stuck is to be on a hill
with one side of the truck on mud, and in that situation the centre
diff-lock makes almost no difference whereas engaging the rear instantly
gives you traction and you climb out.
In 6 years of ownership I have only once needed the front locker (I got
stuck crossing a damp bit in a field with 2 tons of trailer and hay on
the back, with one front wheel *just* on some dry stuff.) I've also
found that on mud with the standard tyres engaging the front diff-lock
just results in a greater tendency to slide sideways!
If you are worried about the front axle why don't you just fit a rear
diff lock and see how it goes? I reckon it gives you more than 90% of
the useful capability of a fully-locked vehicle.

can go all the way ;)

If you have "only" two wheels in the air you only need one locker in the
front or rear, it's only when you have three in the air you need two
lockers!!!
Just kidding by I think the theory is sound, given the price you have it
sound like you will be a good deal and the reduction for one locker won't be
50% less.

If you have factory fitted diff locks there will be a knob under the
steering wheel that rotates one click to give "rear lock" and another
click to give "front & rear lock". There will also be two red symbols
on the dashboard that flash when you turn this and then burn steadily
when the locks engage.

Chris
exactly :) I have that knob and all is as supposed to be with the lights on
the dashboard.
I was thinking that 'all' of us with HDJ80 24valves have that as standard
utilities...
So what I can't understand is how the car will be better with some
'airlockers' ?

Lubo

Hi Lubomir,
LCs from Japan and some other countries tend not to have the factory
lockers fitted as standard so the only option is to get the air
lockers.
