Hi Guys,

I have a 2005 120 LC with 155K miles. On a recent service check up at Toyota, they found that anti-roll bar has snapped off the rear axle housing. Apparently it's beyond salvage, can't be welded etc and they have advised getting a new shell for read axle. At the same time they are not keen to do it as might find more issues underneath that will further increase the costs. I am hoping to take this vehicle on a long overland trip across Africa later this year and joined this forum to get tips/suggestions on getting it prepared. This new issue has thrown a spanner in my plans and I would like to get this resolved before planning anything ahead.

I live in SE London. Could I request members here to recommend any good garages/mechanics in SE who might be able to help with this issue? I will be grateful for any suggestions about Overland preparation specialists. I wouldn't mind travelling further a field, if someone comes highly recommended.

Many thanks.

Suneel

The bar is bolted on and anyone could remove/replace it ?

I posted a video as well but I guess it's not in the correct format, will alter it and upload later.

If everything else is good then a welder could sort it , the panhard just keeps the axle from going sideways so it shouldn't be tremendously difficult to work out where it needs to be .

I don't like searching here because i go around in circles screaming at the computer FOR MY TRUCK FFS!

but i expect you might get a reasonably priced new replacement axle case from them

Thanks Shayne. Here's the video.

Mine went in exactly the same place a couple of years ago. Local agri fabrication place charged me 50 quid to put it back. BUT, if that has gone everything else on the axle is probably well gone too. The top arm turrets. The spring mounts. If I was off overlanding I would get a new axle case rather than snap something else in a few thousand miles. Milners have them in stock with no opening for the diff locker, if your diff locker even works. If you do have a diff locker they are out of stock and about £850. It's worth asking them for exactly what you want. I did and they contacted me a couple of weeks later giving me first dibs on one they'd just got in. Unfortunately you're probably going to be looking at over £1000 for the axle case and getting it fitted. I think the garage I used took about 5 hours to swap everything across, which I thought was very good.

Thanks Rob. I did speak to Milner last week. They don't have this one is stock and he told me about some company in Dubai which they have used before to get these. I didn't want to order it myself as there are so many variants and hence took it to Toyota this week. I am guessing it's unlikely I will find it in stock elsewhere but wanted to find a decent garage in SE which can confirm what's needed, preferable an overland specialist who can advice about other preps as well. Milner is 180+ miles away so was hoping something nearby can do the job. Anyone else you can think of?

Amayama (in Dubai) have them via Japan but that's going to be in excess of £1200 with VAT and a bit of import duty. I'd say they are very safe to buy from but no idea how long to get it. Might be worth trying Simon Holton to see what price he can get, I'll DM you his details. Or just your Toyota parts department. When you've got up off the floor ask them what they can discount to, and then ask again. I've had some success at my local dealer doing that when I'm in a hurry although never better than Simon can do.

But for that sort of money it probably is worth considering getting someone to take it off, sand blast it and as a minimum remake or heavily plate the turrets as well as get the panhard rod bracket replaced. I'd also have them take a good look at the spring mounts, and while the axle is off the spring mounts on the chassis too. Very first place mine went was the brackets on the round cross memeber the top control arms off the axle mount to, so look at them too if you're heading off into the wilderness. That said I've driven hundreds of miles with broken top arms and barely noticed and a welder in Africa is probably a lot cheaper than a welder in SE England.

The other thing I'd have a close look at before you head into the back of beyond is the state of the brake pipes that run along the chassis, behind the fuel tank and onto the back axle. More of a pain to limp along with when they go. And also the state of the fuel filler pipe. Much easier to limp along with but annoying to pour diesel on the floor every time you fill up and fuel stations seem to get a bit twitchy about it!

Thanks Rob for this comprehensive info and sending details of the parts person :)
