Diagnostic software for a Amazon 1999 VX Limited

I have a 1999 VX Limited Diesel Amazon (Import). Does anyone know what kind
of connector and software is required to read the engine faults. The engine
is running very advanced even though the timing appears spot on at the belt.
It is running so advanced that there is hardly any power/acceleration at
all. The engine management light comes on but my mechanic dosen't have the
tool/software to read the faults. For a while the engine starts to run
perfect for a few mins and then appears to advance again. The fault is not
intermittent, it is the otherway round i.e. more wrong than right if you knw
what I mean.
I am in the Reading Berkshire area, can anyone help out? I have tried the
local Toyota Dealer and they say that it is their company policy no to work
on Imports!.

I can't offer software, but I can suggest contacting the Grosvenor
Garage in Guildford (http://www.ggg.co.uk/) who specialise in these
beasts. Not too far from Reading.

I bought mine from them and I was impressed by their professionalism and
helpfulness. Not the cheapest, but they do know what they are talking
about.

Hi,
If your local dealer won't work on an import, shop around and see if
there are other dealers in the area that will help.
If you don't have much luck try to order the workshop manual for the
engine from the dealer and it should give you details of how to extract
the fault codes and identify the problem.
Alternatively I belive that the diagnostic plug is to the OBD-II
standard (On Board Diagnostics) - if you shop around the local engine
tuning companies or larger garages they should have access to the kit
to be able to read the fault codes. Failing that you can either buy
something called a Scanguage or get the cabling and software for a
laptop so that you can check the codes yourself.
If you need any more info, let me know and I will post some links.
With regards the erratic engine timing, have you checked all your
filters, etc to make sure that they are all OK?
