Diesel V Petrol

Hi All,
I did a stupid thing the other day, I went to the garage to fuel up and
picked up the green hose instead of the black one and filled up with
unleaded, I realised less than a mile down the road when the Cruiser ground
to a halt, what I had done.
I was recovered by the RAC and had the system drained and flushed and was
told nothing else was necessary, the engine is running fine with no strange
noises and everything seems OK, but I was wondering what you guys think?

Hi Chas,
In the old days I did this once in my Citroen BX TD. Engine died, tank
was drained and refilled, the car did 20k miles afterwards before it
was sold for almost the same sum I had bought it five years ago.

You should be fine with a Landcruiser. It s the other way around that

I don't think you have anything to worry about. My wife did this in her
2000 vintage Vauxhall Zafira (2 litre DTi engine, but not hi-tech high
pressure etc) about 5 years / 60k miles ago, and it's still absolutely
fine, with no effects on performance or economy.
Apparently what you did tends to be OK because you ground to a halt
quickly. What *does* knacker the injection pump is filling with (say)
60/40 mix of petrol/diesel, on which it will just about run, and
struggling on for a long distance with it as this results in wear to the
injection pump.

Thanks to all who replied and calmed my fears, at least the tank was
virtually empty when I filled up so it would have been almost neat 4*

Hi Chas
Like the others, I heard that once you drain and replace the filters it
should be fine.
I have nearly done it a few times especially when i have a hired or borrowed
car when the cruiser is off the road.
And then when i get the cruiser back I have to rethink.
I find sometimes if your mind is preoccupied it would be easy to do.
Best of luck

Hi John,
My problems seem very small compared with what you have been through since I
joined this group. I was told by the people who cleaned the system that a
new filter was not needed, that was just something the manufacturers said to
increase sales. They also told me about an owner of either a BMW or a Merc,
I can't remember which now, who was quoted ?7000 that's right, seven
thousand pounds, by a dealer to do the same job!
I was sure I had used the same pump in the garage that I always use, same
pump island, same right hand hose, either they had swapped their pumps
around or more likely my brain is failing!!
BTW the noises from my front end turned out to be a knackered crown wheel
and pinion, estimate was ?1350 + vat to rebuild, will find out the final
total on Mon when I collect it.

I believe the reverse - diesel in a petrol is worse - knackers the cat
converter.
Diesel in petrol, petrol won't ignite in a compression engine so the engine
just stops.
Brother-in-law had to pay for flushing anf filters on a transit hire van -
he hired it for a kitchen fitter and the bloke filled up with petrol, no
other damage.

Front diff rebuild

Final bill for total rebuild of front diff came to ?1615.52 inc the dreaded
vat, pretty close to his original estimate of ?1350 + vat. There were a
couple of bits that were needed but not allowed for originally.
