diff locks (80)

Hi Guys
I ran the only check on my diffs that I know of so bear with me. I tried to engage the centre diff and all seems fine. When I tried to engage the RR diff with the centre diff still on the light on the dash just blinked and blinked.
When I then turned the knob futher to the FR RR the two lights on the dash blimked and I heard the click sound at the passenger side wheel well. So I know the part at the passenger side is working because it is clicking but know I do not know what else to do to get the diffs working the way they should. Can anyone help .

John,
Do you have it in low box?, and do you know that the diff's will only lock
if the wheels start to spin?
Regards, Clive.

Assuming that the centre lock is engaged (steady orange light on dash) it is quite normal for both front and rear diff locks to flash when first selected. This is because it's fairly unlikely that the teeth in the differentials will be lined up exactly, permitting the locks to engage, when you first select them. The left & right wheels on each axle need to turn at different speeds to allow the cogs in the differential to line up and the lock to engage.

On a dry surface, on which you shouldn't be using them anyway, you may have to go quite a way in something other than a straight line to get them to engage, and usually the front will engage first.

On a slippery surface where you are getting wheel-spin (ie the left & right wheels are turning at different speeds) they should engage pretty much immediately. If you are getting wheel spin firstly stop the spin, then engage the locks, then accelerate very gently until they engage: trying to engage them when the wheels are spinning violently is one way to break the mechanisms. (This is a paraphrase of what the user manual says.)

So find some good slippery mud where you can provoke wheel-spin without much effort, and start experimenting.

Morning John,
The quickest way to check the diff locks is as follows:
Turn the ingnition on.
Put the car into low range - this should engage the centre diff lock -
you should hear a click from the passenger footwell kick panel and
(possibly) a wirring noise as the acctuator works and the CDL light
should light up.
Then try activating the front and rear diff locks - again you should
hear a click and wirring noise and get a flashing light on the dash
corresponding to the diff you have turned on.
If you don't hear the clicks you may have a problem with the ECU which
is in either the drivers side or passenger side foot well (there is one
each side).
If you don't hear the wirring noise then it is probably an issue with a
seized actuator - these can be stripped down and cleaned to help them
along.
Once you have done these test then follow what the others have said.
One thing I can't remember is whether you will need to put the auto box
in gear as well.
