diff oil

Hi all
Can some one answer this question .
What oil can I use in the diff's on my motor .the mechanic says I must
use hypoid only and not EP 80/90 or equivalent.
He says this is due to the design of the diff being hypoid just like
transits and it is a common problem with using EP oil as it causes
excessive wear or some thing like that.
Is this a load of speal or what

Hi Ray,
Your mechanic is right; the diffs are a hypoid design i.e. they use a
sliding contact between the pinion and crownwheel teeth.
I think all GL5 rated oils are suitable for hypoid use, whereas most GL4
oils won't stand up to long term use in your diffs. If it says hypoid on the
pack you should be fine.
