Different wheel fittins?

Peter,
It is the friction bewteen the nut and the wheel surface that prevents
it from getting undone, not the force with which you tighten up the
thread. I've seen what happens when wheel nuts get loose and the wheel
comes off at 100 mph, so I am anally retentive about such things. I
would get the proper nuts.

Peter,
When you said the washers were loose I imagined the nut was not tight
agains the wheel. In my LC the nuts are camfered (close ended type)
and the rims also have matching chamfer. I think this is the typical
setup, not only for Toyota. Are your wheel nuts original or
aftermarket?

Peter, the earlier models had a chamfer on the wheel and the nut. This
arrangement can be a real pig to undo, later models, such as my 97,
have a flat seat and nuts that match.
Regards, Clive.
