DIY Draw system

Hi,
I'm trying to pursuade someone ;-) not to spend mega ??? on a pre build
draw system suggesting that I/we build something instead.
The one area I haven't managed to pin down is the runners for the
drawers - can any of you recommend a good supplier of rattle free
runners?

Julian
B&Q warehouse stores sell them up to 45kg capacity 600mm long I think.
I have just got some to try plus if you are really worried about
strength just double them up.
Regards
Ray

Julian,
Take them from some old filing cabinets, some of them have long
reach runners in.

Hi Clive,
Yes, thought of that, but don't have any filing cabinets lying around.
Also ideally looking for something a little sturdier that won't rattle.

Hi Julian, I've been lurking silently on the list for the last few months and at last found a subject I may be able to assist you on.

Try looking at http://www.hafele.co.uk/Hafele35a1/Templates/Hafele/intro.asp?button=3Dintro They are a company that supply furniture and ironmongery to caravan manufacturers etc. and you can browse their online catalogue as a guest or order a full catalogue. They state that they only supply to the trade, however you can register online and set up a proxy account, paying for items with a debit card etc. I have had a quick look and they have runners rated up to 227kg per pair. I have ordered drawer systems for my kitchen cabinets in the past like this at a much lower price than you can get them from the likes of Magnet, Moben and MFI etc. Hope that's a help. Hi Ray,
Just seen similar on a web site - would be interested to know how you get
on with them.

Hi Niall,
I haven't finalised that - when looking into it a while back I was considering welding up some 1" aluminium box section.
I'm also trying to get some composite material for the cover instead of ply - I have access to some off cuts but am trying to find someone that can sell me one or two sheets as opposed to a bulk order.
Whatever we end up with it should be a lot cheaper than any of the off the shelf solutions.
Cheers,
Julian

Alright Julian
Re> I was considering welding up some 1" aluminium box section.
Nice low weight option :)
Re> I'm also trying to get some composite material for the cover instead

For sheeting out the frame I'm looking at 1.5mm galv steel sheets - can
be sourced from friendly ductwork manufacturers. This is lighter than
ply and should also be strong enough to take the runners - although I
wasn't going to put runners in until I saw some of the info come through
on them yesterday.
As you say - will be a lot cheaper than the off the shelf jobs
Cheers
Niall

Julian

The hinges I purchased from B&Q are the same as what you get in filing
cabinets and most draws. They are full roller bearing design and fully
extendable. But only 45kg load capacity which in my opinion is not that
bad compared against the cost and if you double them up you would have a
very strong draw runner. I personally would not like to have a big draw
that has much more weight in it just in case it fails as it will be a
bugger to handle if it does or may be some steel toe boots may come in
handy.
I think I am aiming at installing a stack of 3 draws in the back which
would hold most of what I want plus more.
The only draw back with these hinges is that if you try and make a
timber draw box the fixing point into the timber would not last as the
size of the fixing are quite narrow ,so movement can happen easily as
you can not get a very good fixing on to timber with a small fixing . I
was thinking of mounting the hinges on to alloy plates then mounting it
on to the wooden draw box (moisture resistant MDF) the plates would
spread the load much more and reduce the fixing points from coming
loose. As you would be able to use a nut and bolt to fix the hinge to
the plate to get a better purchase.

Hi Niall
This is a question which no doubt you have already thought about but I have
to ask just to get it out of my head.
Did you or others concider improving the braking capabilities of the
cruisers in anyway with all that extra weight on board.
Stuff like larger calipers if pre late 92 I think and improved brake pads
and discs like the drilled and slotted ones.
cheers

Hi Somers,
I'm thinking of having the runners attached to the main frame and then
either frame based drawers with either light ply or composite panels. I
wouldn't want metal sheet due to the noise - wood or composite would
absorb the noise more.

Hi guys,
I use a sheet of 18mm plywood sliding in and out using C-shaped alu
channels attached to the sides of the cargo space. The plywood floor
covers almost the whole space behind the front seats. Underneath the
plywood floor I keep several strong flat plastic containers. If I need
access to those boxes that sit deep inside the space, I just pull out
the plywood floor and reach for the items through the side doors.
Cheap, simple, no rattle, easy to fit, but not very sexy, I know ...
