Hi guys
I would like to drain the coolant in the cruiser but as usual I am having a
little bother. I had a look for the drain plugs on the rad and cant find
them and even worse I cant find the engine drain plug, I have looked but
with all the bits on the right side of the engine it really hard to see ant
thing. The manual says it takes 12 litre but even if I undo the bottom hose
it wont take that amount. I would like to give it a complet drain so has any
one done this before and can help.
Thanks

Hi John,
The drain plug on the rad should be located near the bottom rad hose, it is
a white, plastic, butterfly shaped thingy.
My Gregory's workshop manual for FJ series 85-80 states..'the cylinder
block drain tap is located midway along the left hand side of the block'.
Far as I can remember it was the same on my HZJ75 back in Australia.
Just climbed under my beast and found the engine drain plug is more to the
rear of the block than 'midway', looks like a little plug that a 12mm
spanner would fit.
Short version of how to drain the cooling system..
Position heater control lever in maximum heating position
Remove radiator cap
Drain system by opening the radiator and cylinder block taps several turns.
(removing the bottom hose works for me)
After the coolant had drained I used to put a garden hose in the radiator
and with the engine idling, keep the water flushing until it ran clear. Just
keep enough water going in so that it does not run out of the rad top.
Hope this helps.

John,
My first rad refill I couldn't find the thingie either.
It turned out my book (Hayes at the time) had a diagram but had it on the
wrong side. Of course I'd never done this b4 so I dutyfully pulled out the
only thing in that (near) position.
It turned out to be a connector for the A/C and man did I get a stock from
that !
Of course I eventually found the right location (and man it was a bugger to
undo with cold twiddyly figures -who the heel put it in that stupid location
!)
Enclose 2 pictures. Mine's a petrol US so I wouldn't give take my 'location
position' as relevance to your diesel beast.
Both taken from underneath looking up. So facing the truck mine was up over
the top of the rad, down the other side on the bottom right. I had to stand
on the bumper and stretch my hand all the way down along the RH side until u
could 'feel' it with your fingers. The initial twist is the hardest.
Don't try it with the car on and the fan going !!!
Lal in sunny Colorado and awaiting the cool weather so can go trap a hawk!
However snow is several months away although there are slivers still showing
on the mountain tops :)
