[ELCO Digest Turbo Trouble?

Gareth,
Mine is a similar vehicle and the turbo has whistled since I got
it, my lads both say that they should whistle. I am not so sure about
getting louder though, or the loss of power. I will suggest that the
power loss could be something else, causing the turbo to increase its
noise.

Hi Gareth,
Long time no speak.
Are you sure. My first though is that the whistling is from a crack/hole in the
pipework between the turbo and the engine.
Have you got a boost guage that you can attach to the car to see if it is boostiing
properly? (You say it is boosting, but is it enough?)
I think that you will find that the AAI sport turbo is cheaper than a new one from
Toyota - it certainly was for Lubo, not 100% sure about UK prices.

Late reply 'cos I've been on holiday. My 1996 1HD-FT turbo is
practically inaudible - you need to be driving alongside a brick wall on
the driver's side with the window open to hear anything, and even then
you have to listen hard.
Do you still have all the EGR kit fitted? If so it could be a plumbing
problem with one of the many vacuum pipes (which I don't even pretend to
understand), which is where I'd start looking.
