[ELCO Digest]

hi,
i am not from zimbo, but spent 3 weeks working for phalaborwa mining company
50% owned by rio tinto(northern province sa), where i discovered africa :)
not managed to drive down there yet!, but since my first trip in 1999 i have
been on my holiday a further 4 times and ventured around the north east
south africa, mainly kruger park and surrounding areas, not vastly travelled
like some of you.
you can have a look at some of my pics if you are feeling home sick :)...
i am home sick, and i was born and raised in england, the bush gets a grip
on you and brings you back to your roots ;)
http://gallery.cruiser70.com/main.php?g2_itemid=14915 (work in progress, a
lot more to come when i get a chance)...
ok it's not zimbo but not that far either :)
regards
martin.

hi Fred, gary, and jeff
interesting to see all the zimbo connections.
well, my family are from the hartley/chegutu area - my g grandfather
opened up the cotton industry in that area. my father was a doctor
with rio tinto, so although from a farming family we grew up on mines.
home for me was a small fantasy world which really existed - goes by
the charming name "eiffel flats". as a mine it was called cam and
motor mine - in its day the richest gold mine in the world!! the big
town near us was gatooma/kadoma.
i went to school at falcon (1979-82), so got to know both bullies and
plumtree very well. :)
my favourite spots in the country were inyanga, wankie and mana...
i remember seeing my first rich tobacco farmer drive up in his brand
new 1991 landcruiser gx. it was the most beautiful car i'd ever seen,
and i decided then that i would get one.... we drove it around the
farm, through the irrigation ditches etc and tried to get it stuck...
great fun :)
sadly, i have to work.. so cheers for now.

Hi, thanks. Is this an urgent repair? Is it worth fitting a genuine Toyota
one?
Claire :-}
but now it seems to be most of the
time.
Any ideas what it might be?

I had "clonking on hard lock", exactly as you have. It first occurred at about 125k miles on the original CV joints after a long trip of heavy towing.
I now have 2x Milners CV joints in mine, fitted 3 years/35k miles ago, and no problems so far.
There were about =A3100 each as opposed to over =A3300 each for the Toyota part. However Julian advised me to use proper Toyota seals, which come as a kit, since - apparently - the Milners seals are no good, so I did. (Or rather got the people who did the work to use them.)
I don't think it's urgent for everyday use, I left mine for about a year from "date of first occasional clonk" until it got to the "this is happening quite a lot and I really need to do something about it" stage. On the other hand if you know that you will be putting a lot of load through the transmission on a regular basis, or you are planning a long trip, I would get it done.
Two other things:
- While in there they found that my king-pin swivel bearings were on the point of falling apart on the left hand side. Easy to check and cheap to fix.
- Changing the CV joints took a *lot* of slop out of my transmission, making the truck much easier to drive. Mine's a manual, so this was probably more of an issue than it would have been with an auto box, but it was worth doing for that improvement alone.

Hi Claire,
I was going to say something along the lines of what Christopher wrote, in
fact I entered it on my phone and then lost the email, probably turn up in a
year or so.
Only thing I would add is if the noise has started getting worse quickly
then sooner rather than later, also don't be too keen to pass on knowledge
to a Toy dealer - explain there is a noise and let them look at it with an
open mind, then if they diagnose it wrong and it's not just the CV they own
the problem more.

Hi Andy
So sorry to hear your story.
I had exactly the same problem with the same wheel May bank holiday.
I heard the disk rubbing, stopped and felt the hub - no heat in the
hub, so I carried on and less than 30miles (on tar) later as I was
descending a hill and needed the brakes I realised they were fading
away. I slowed and saw huge clouds of smoke - even at that moment i
thought this must be coming from another vehicle. Then when I stopped
I saw the truth.
The short story is recovered by AA, and my neighbour who is a mechanic
had to use an angle grinder to get the nuts, locktab and melted stub
axle off. The bearings were in bits, and we had to cut the stub axle
up to get it off the CV... only to find that that had picked up some
of the molten metal and lost about 1/3 of its diameter in places.
Total rebuild...
What really was amazing is: Apart from brake fade, a noise resembling
a bit of rubbing, and a whole lot of smoke - the car was driving well
despite the trauma occurring in the hub.
The first vehicle to stop was a LR Discovery. I have eaten lots of
humble pie since then. Learning experience - I must stop slagging
landrovers off... we do brake down sometimes, just not every week.
Good luck getting it all sorted out.
Graham.

Hi
I have broken down on the side of the road a few times and each time apart
from one the cruiser had to be carried back on a recovery vehicle.. The
other time I was towed by a Picasso MPV and that make me feel crap as I
could see over it and it was a strain on its little engine.
cheers

Hi jon, thanks for that, it is indeed a big twin axle. Did you find the
front tow ball was worth it? Its normally my other half that tows, and he
can manoeuvre the van all over with the normal hitch, but I want to learn to
tow the van and tight space manoeuvring (like the storage site) is something
that worries me.

The OEM bumper brackets on an 80 I know from experience are very flimsy.
I'm guessing the 1700kg means your van is twin axle so more resistant to
turning. I think there's a good chance the OEM bumper brackets will buckle
when tight turning the van with any resistance like a kurb if you just put
a hitch on the OEM bumper.
We had a Watling front bar on my wife's 80 for shunting a big twin axle
van about and it worked well. It mounts to the chassis and AFAIK is clear
of the crush areas that absorb minor impacts before the bags go off.

Hi Claire
My 80 also had water in the foot wells.
It was from the 2 drainage holes on the sunroof. Open the sunroof, and
you will see the little drainage holes. I pushed a thin plastic tube

Hi Claire
My 80 also had water in the foot wells.
It was from the 2 drainage holes on the sunroof. Open the sunroof, and
you will see the little drainage holes. I pushed a thin plastic tube
through and then flushed it with the hose pipe... sorted th problem
out.

At landrover playdays/off road days I have seen both disco 3 and new rangies
with nice beefy tyres and both are pretty capable off roaders if their
owners are prepared to try it.

You're right, I don't think I have ever seen a Disco 3 with anything
other than low profile (!!) more or less slicks, which makes we wonder
why people buy them.

Hi Andy
At the end you get what you pay for...
I have and still use an IBS system -
http://www.ventureoverland.com/index.php?option=3Dcom_content&task=3Dview&id=3D38&Itemid=3D29
You can get them from other suppliers but this is a good picture....
During the snow I started a friends car using the link button... I was
also able to check that his alternator was charging, but only when his
revs were over 1800...
I have a permanent high Amp cable to the back of the car, which I can
plug a 75A plug into. Into this I can plug my solar panel, the trailer
batteries, or jump leads... or a cigarette lighter socket...
Been the best electrical gadget I have put on a car...

Don't mind either way about forum or mail list but not sure if the
landcruiserclub.net forum is where I want to be - just went to join and you
cant even pick your own user name, they dictate it has to be your 'real'
name.- this is a bit Gestapo ish for my taste.

The ELCO list has been very quiet over the past few months. I have joined
up with the new Land Cruiser Club having been a member of TLOC. One of the
problems with TLOC is the administrator appears to have no real interest in
Cruisers, TLOC is just one of the forums he runs. Land Cruiser Club (
http://www.landcruiserclub.net/forum ) on the other hand is actually run by
people who own, use and enjoy Cruisers.
My vote goes for merging ELCO into the Land Cruiser Club and running on
their forum.
Cheers
Ian

Hi Claire / all others.
I've been a lurker on ELCO for a while now.
Quite the contrary, Land Cruiser Club is not trying to be Gestapo in any
way. It is in fact, going to be quite the opposite.
The forum is all of two weeks old now and so far, is showing a lot of
promise.
The username request was in an attempt to try and keep names simple and
clean. The South African site does it this way with great success and word
has it, PradoPoint is trying to convert.
We have had long debates about it; should we allow any old name or should we
stick to the name / surname combination. It was agreed we would try the name
/ surname thing now, while the site is new and see how it goes. If it really
is a problem, we would not enforce it Gestapo style but simply say it was a
lesson learned and revert.
Surprisingly, a number of already registered users on the site have asked to
have their usernames changed before we asked for it. Since asking the
existing members, some have raised some concerns but for the most part,
people seem happy to go with their real names.
Please don't think there is anything dictatorial about Land Cruiser Club.
The aim is to be the exact opposite. This is a site which is run by
LandCruiser enthusiasts, for just that: LandCruiser enthusiasts. Nothing
more, nothing less. Anything else, would benefit no-one.
Regards,
Crispin

Its just like having a nickname/shortening in real life - otherwise we would
all be going around addressing each other as Mr John Smith (or whatever your
name is) at all times. I tend to be eclaire on most lists but have ended up
as claires when registering on the forum.
claire:-}
We were hoping to go down that route, but some people have major
objections so we backed down from that.
It is *preferred* that people use their real names - trying to deal with
people with names like thingamabob and Ivegotabigone can be a little
irritating.

Hi all
Just thought I needed to add my bit.
I was born and raised in Derbyshire and moved down to Crawley
in Sussex in 1999.
No sooner had I settled in down here when my then new boss
nicknamed me Ecky Thump, a handle that has stayed with me
ever since.
The fact is that 90 percent of people who know me now, call me
Ecky and very few will know my real name is Les.
I use Ecky Thump on the forums I use as it is what I am known as.
If the guys on the forum wanted me to use my real name I would
do so happily and in fact Les is in my sig line.
I guess I just don't want people to think I am hiding behind a
pseudonym.
However having said all that, I also don't mind others on the forum
using nicknames because over the last few years I have met most
of them and they all seem to be honest decent people. Probably
something to do with my age but I remember the nickname/car
better than a first name. Just ask whatshisname!!!!
