John, Julian.
Sorry yes as usual Julian's right. I am getting so forgetful now bearing in mind that I replaced my driver's side swivel complete with new bearings back in the summer. The only way that the whole thing can come off is if the swivels that are bolted in top and bottom break or come unbolted - my mind had me thinking that the swivels were on the end top and bottom of the swivel hub and the bearings fitted on them. Must have seen that on something else.
One thing to add though, when I had the front diff replaced, the axle specialist I went to said that one of the main causes of inner seal failure was swivel bearings being worn as they allowed the drive shaft to move a touch up and down which in effect wears the seal oval.

Hi John,

The bearings enable one item to rotate around another item - they don't =3D
hold the two together.

In the knuckles you have the Knuckle bearings at the top and bottom that =3D
allow the steering knuckle, hub, disk wheel etc to rotate around the =3D
ball at the end of the axle. The knuckle and bearings are held in place =3D
by spindles, one at the top and one at the bottom that are bolted to the =3D
knuckle.

The hub sits on the inner and outer wheel bearings that are held in =3D
place on the stub axle by the hub nuts - there is a specific procedure =3D
in the manual that ensures that the bearings bed in correctly and then =3D
the hub nuts are tightened properly - just tightening the hub nuts up =3D
without the bedding in procedure will either result in the bearings =3D
being too tight and wearing prematurely or coming loose within a few =3D
hundred miles more often than not causing wear on the stub axle.

Went to the dealer today to get a check donw on my 100 series 4.7 V8.Problem I had was; accelerator was very non-linear. On pressing a little there was a rush of power and then when pedal was mid way, there was suddenly no power, on pressing a little more it became ok.After spending an hour for them to hook the car up to the diagnostic machine, they came back to tell me they could not find the plug. That it's not where it usually is. Manager told me to come back in a few days so they could spend more time. Got in the car, started it and saw check engine light which eas no there before. Went back inside, service guy said, no worries, drive it like that and we'll check it when you get back. Get back in the car, try to drive off,, no power until the pedal is compltely to the floor. Went back inside. Twat service guy says that's the way it was when i vame in. The lying b@$t@rd!Anyway, they have a look at it and tell me i need a new throttle body- =A31,000 (uk pounds) + labour.........Had a look at the throttle body, when you pull on the accelerator cable, the flap only partyly opens when it should be maxAny suggestions?I read that 98/99 mdels had a problem with the aps or something. Anyone elaborate on it?Is there anyway I can reset the ecu. I think it's running in safe mode? again, suggestions?Stupid dealer thn tells me their diagnostic machine is playing up............AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

Since the above, have replaced TPS but still have engine warning light. Car still in limb mode. Bought obd reader but can't find plug on the car, it's not in driver feet area anywhere.......................

Always makes me feel bad (and lucky it's not me) when I hear about trouble
with Toyota service. Shouldn't happen.
Anyhow:
1
If your car is a 98/99, non-US model, it is likely that there is no
diagnostic plug inside the car. That is something that came with the OBD
II compliance AFAIK. But, there is a connector in the engine
compartment. If RHD isn't different, it is located on the right side
(starboard) about midway between the battery and the AHC reservoir. It's
a rectangular black rubber-topped little block marked DIAG. Oh, it's a
V8. Then maybe it's a bit relocated. Don't have the book for the V8 but
maybe I'll find it in the Body Electrics Section...
2
Since I have a HDJ I haven't paid much attention, but I remember seeing
quite a lot on Mud about your problem on US vehicles. Something about
there being two sensors which can fail, and that garages normally change
the wrong one. Was it TPS (Throttle position sensor) and APS ?
(Accelerator P S)? I suggest http://forum.ih8mud.com/100-series-cruisers/

Yes it sounds pretty good, although without seeing it couldn't be certain. Is it an import or a UK one, does it have a reasonable spec. What does it run like. Ny white smoke on starting (impending head down the drain).Any blue smoke, turbo seals. Any leaks. What is the mileage?.
The engine should run pretty smooth and quiet. Not as smooth as a 80 series but not lumpy. Should start first time on the key hot and cold with no accelerator.
Check the coolant for oil, check the oil for condensation sludge (these engines run quite warm so any condensation sludge means lots of water in the oil. Start the engine with the rad cap off from cold. If water bubbles up violently, head is gone.
Finally, gearbox should change cleanly for a manual if a bit clunky, auto should be smooth, no jerks.
Think that=E2=80=99s it, rest of it is common sense. Head is the major weak spot, turbo like all diesels can go at high mileages if abused.

brake pads. Metal to Metal on the offside

Thank you for the thoughts.
The cruiser will not be going anywhere until I've sorted this problem so no
worries there. Had a quick look at the discs through the wheels and there
doesn't seem to be any scoring or any other untoward signs.
Jon - if it is the loose caliper bolt thingy:
a) How will I know? Yes I know the bolts will be loose but how will I know
if the bolts are knackered?
b) And if they are knackered can't I simply use new bolts?
I'll check and get the wheels off tomorrow, weather permitting.
Pete

it is recommended to replace both at the same time.

Good morning Every One,
I have taken down a broken cage & the cv joint (r side) on my LC: it
started with clunking noises on a full lock r or l a couple of days ago and
went yesterday.
Got all the bits from milner, including an additional cv joint as spare.
One bit of advice, please: change the other cv join regardless?
And whiche grease to use and finally how often do you suggest to inspect
them?
Many thanks,

Hi All,
As you all know the ELCO weekend kicks off at Lincomb Farm tomorrow night.
If any of you have a change of heart and want to come and join us for the
whole weekend or even just pop along for part of the day, please give me a
call on 07971 540362 - we have plenty of space so the more the merrier.
Full details of the weekend are available at
http://www.landcruisers.info/LincombIntro.html.
The weekend will be a mix of socialising, green laning and off roading on
the off road course.
Toyota are generously providing a hospitality suite for us to use and
someone from Toyota will be joining us on the Saturday with one of the new
200 series and maybe even try it out on the off road course, which will be
interesting.
We have settled on having a Hog Roast on the Saturday night, so it should be
a fun evening around the camp fire.
For those of you coming tomorrow, just pitch up any time after around 5.30pm
and either Tony Symonds (the host) or I should be around to direct you to
the camping areas.
If you are coming on Saturday morning, please try to be with us for around
9.00am for the start of the days activities.
If you are camping and wanting food, please don't forget to bring your own
cutlery.
I look forward to seeing (some of) you tomorrow.

Hi Stefano,
If you are unsure of the age of the other CV, change it now and then at least you know where you are.
Most of the Milner kit is OK, however, do not use their snap ring that goes on end on the half shaft holding the CV onto it - they do not snap and can cause damage to the halfshaft if/when you later have to remove the CV - the only way I have found of removing the Milner CVs is to use a Plasma cutter (gas or an angle grinder would also do it) cut away the cage - they cannot be knocked off with a large hammer.
Also, throw away the Milner Inner Axle Seal and get genuine Toyota ones - the Milner ones are a much harder rubber causing more wear on the halfshaft and are more prone to leaking.
As for grease, you need a lithium based grease for the wheel bearings and a Molybendum (usually Lithium + Moly) based grease for the CV.
Regards
Julian

Hi Stefano,
One cv joint failing does not necessarily mean the other one is bad as
well, but it's worth investigating why it failed in the first place to
see if the other one could be affected. Did you have any problems with
lubrication / water ingress?
If you are not sure about the cause, you can either replace the other
one and keep the used one as spare (for "mission critical"
situations), or just forget it for a while and observe what happens
next.
Use molybdenum grease on cv joints.

It is quite possible to fit a transmission from an 80 Series (5 speed
Manual) plus HF2A full time transfer case to a Small block Chevy. An adaptor
would be required and Marks 4WD Adaptors in Aus is the place to go and get
one.
http://www.marks4wd.com/products/engine-trans-conversions/toyota/landcruiser
/lc-fj80chevv8.html
Alternatively, while the Toyota 5 speed manual is very strong, it may be
worth using a TH700 Autobox and converting it to use the Toyota transfer
case. This may be a stronger solution if the Small black is being heavily
tuned as the Small block can be tuned to achieve immense power and torque
and the TH700 is designed to go with it. A TH400 from memory is even
stronger but I am not sure if a conversion kit is available.
Personally I would recommend using an Autobox with the Small Block, the
power delivery of even a mildly tweaked Small block can mean it is very
difficult to drive it smoothly on a manual and can make detonating a clutch
a real possibility - think trying to launch a 4WD with lots of grip out of
mud with an engine delivering 350 lb ft or more of torque and you can see
that smooth delivery of power is essential to avoid breaking stuff like
axles, clutch etc. The Auto is far more forgiving and as the delivery of
power is so low down the rev range, an auto provides no disadvantage to a
manual in the majority of cases. If you want a crisper change you can always
get a high stall converter and a performance kit for the box - I used to run
a Camaro with a TH350 box, high stall converter and performance valve body -
the changes were teeth rattling somewhat like a manual change with no care
taken with feeding in the clutch. However for off road work I would suggest
this route is not the best solution, better to keep it smooth and sweet. To get a box and transfer case, best bet is to keep an eye on eBay or to ask
a question on one of the Breaker sites that search around a number of
breakers - I managed to locate a front axle this way.
For Axles I would suggest that with a Small Block, strength is key - 80
series, 60 series, Ford 9 inch or Dana 60 would do the job, anything less
beefy will probably become a major weak point.
A couple of other points, he should fit an MSD ignition kit to the Small
block if it is not electronic - improves reliability no end and a set of
wrapped headers will help keep the engine bay temp down to a reasonable
level. The Small Block if in standard trim is not too fussy about cooling,
it runs fairly cool anyway as long as the exhaust heat can get out, however
if tuned then cooling becomes more important, a decent radiator will pay
dividends.
Personally I think the Small Block is one of the best engines ever built,
cost against power and reliability cannot be beaten, plus the bits are easy
to come by as well. There are a few good US parts shops in the UK and it's
amazing how cheap some of the items are - I paid =A330 delivered for a water
pump for my Camaro and a while later well over double for a Water pump for
my 1981 Celica which was about half the size and weight.

A mate of mine is building a mad 4x4, with a small-block chevvy as a power
source.
He wants a manual transmission and transfer box to hook it all together.
Several sources say that TLC 5-speed and transfer box is an option.
Does anyone have any leads where he could buy a gearbox and transfer box out
of an 80-series in the UK
and even better any clues on conversion plates would be greatfully recieved.
Thanks
Andy

2008/9/5 DAVE ROBERTS <[Email address removed]>:

Benoit,
He's yelling as he is not very computer literate and he thinks viruses
from us are giving him some problems. I would be looking at my own PC if I
was having trouble and no-one else was. I have no problem, anyone else?
