On the 95 with the 1KZT engine, the batteries should always be 12V in
Parallel all the time - this is the so called Winter option and is also the
same on the Hilux Surf with the same engine. Main reason that it is done
this way is cost to manufacture, two smaller batteries wired in parallel is
cheaper for the same power output than 1 large one. One good thing with this
is it gives you a second battery tray already fitted so that if you want to
go the route of fitting a Deep Cycle leisure battery it's a case of getting
one decent starter battery that fits and one deep cycle leisure battery that
fits, put them in the battery tray and fit a split charge. You don't need to
find a separate place for that leisure battery. The engine will quite
happily start from a single battery with enough power.

Reinhard, the 95 is not so common as the 90 but Toyo do have a lot of
variants according to climate, especially on the 70/80 series. On
these for north European conditions there is 24 volt starting (look
at the spec plate on your starter motor, best seen by putting a digi
camera down beside it and looking at the picture standing up !).
So, assuming that your installation looks an obvious OEM fitment and
not an after market addition. You will see that there is a changeover
switch/relay that puts the batts in series for starting only, to give
the 24 volts, otherwise all systems are on 12 when the engine is
running or the vehicle is stationary with engine switched off. So
just check that yours is the same, it may be.
On the accessory issue, a lot of their models have an accessory
position counter to the usual rotation of the switch, and in my
experience one can remove the key. In fact on the 70/80's I come
across the key can be removed whilst the engine is running. But I use
mostly military spec vehicles which may be different to a
retail market spec. I don't know.
HTH, if not and you are now confused then someone else may be able to
help, but there are few 90's on the forum unfortunately.

Hi Neil,
Hopefully those numbers will be successful in getting doors for your HJ60.
The site about the world record breaking HJ60 is:
http://www.weltrekordreise.ch/a_starte.html - certainly makes interesting
reading and shows the rebuild undertaken in Malaysia.
Thanks for the tip about the oil pump, I'll have a look at mine!

What an amazing journey. I thought my FJ62 looked a bit rusty until I
saw theirs on rebuild! But then, that one has certainly worked for
it's keep....

thanks chaps - i will probably just make do with the one out of my disco.
its not too bad fitting - just a little bit too wide which means it has to
go on the slant!! i hung it with big cable ties from the two back roof
handles then bungeed it to the headrest. its a bit heath robinson but i cant
really afford to get a new one at the mo!!

FrogsIsland have an end of year sale/winter stock clearance at the moment,
so you might be able to pick up a bargain, they have an open day on the 6th
December I think.

hi my tlc is a 1994 vx estate 4.2td manual gearbox and when i set off from a
junction and turn one of the rear wheels seems to skid only very slightly
?none of the diff lock lights are on ? in high box i thought that the diff
locks cannot be selected only in low box ?i have bought the vehicle off a
very good friend who did'nt want to part with her but he had chance of a
newer tlc 1998 vx so reluctantly he sold me the beast. but i must admit it
was,nt easy ?anyway back to the chase -my friend had a clutch fitted at the
local garage and its been like it ever since this was done about 5 months
ago .now i know that there r three diff locks on her one on each axle and
one onside of the transfer box/gearbox to lock out the box could this be
faulty ?also it turns out that the plonker at the garage topped up the
swivel hubs at the front and they leaked ?instead of repairing the glands if
i can call the seals that he pumped them full of grease?would this have
caused any problems . me and my partner r prepared to put this big beast
back into business as we have another toy to tow behined it a modified
sportrack wich follows us on an A frame. the chap i bought this off frosty
welded the rear diff to act as a diff lock ?but weve had her about six
months and his actions has caused the transfer box to slowly disintergrate
and i dont want this to happen to my tlc because that would brake my heart
as i want to make her better not worse so any help will b very much welcome
best regards markus

Markus,
Your cruiser may have been modified so that the locks work in high or
low, it is a popular mod. Check the diff lock lights, if one is not working
you may be locked without knowing it. Then jack the back up and try to move
the wheels, if the lock is in they will move together.

Could it be that when the clutch was changed, that the gearbox was dropped
and the vacuum pipes removed?
Not even sure if an 80 has them or not, and why that should affect the rear
I don't know(maybe something with the centre lock and wind up), but on a 70
(part time 4wd) if you get the two vacuum pipes the wrong way around it
reverses the operation of the 4wd centre lock I believe, not sure if the
light will come on?
Also might be worth checking the wheel bearings to see if they are gone,
jack up one wheel and pull it in and out does it move in and out of the
axle(full floating axle)?
While you are there jack the other side of the rear up, whilst in neutral
and the handbrake off(chock the wheels!) spin one wheel back and forth.
Does the other rear wheel spin the same direction? If so its locked up for
some reason?

If a back wheel is "skidding slightly" on turns it suggests to me that
the centre diff lock is engaged. If the rear diff lock were engaged
you would be having major problems steering round corners at all!
This *should* show an orange light on the dash, but clearly it isn't.
I think the easiest way to check this is to find some level ground (for
safety!) chock the front wheels and then jack up the complete rear axle
so that both rear wheels are off the ground. Put the main and hi/lo
transfer case gear levers both into neutral to disconnect the
transmission from the gearbox and engine.
Then try turning one rear wheel by hand. (Note that in all the tests
below there will be a bit of free play, when I say "turn" I mean a good
solid rotation through at least half a turn.)
- If it won't turn at all then both rear and centre locks are engaged.
- If it will turn and the other back wheel turns in the *same* direction
then the rear lock is engaged, but the centre one is free (unlikely from
what you've described so far, but just possible).
- If it will turn, and the other back wheel turns in the *opposite*
direction, then at least you know the rear lock is not engaged.
- Assuming that it turns (and hopefully the other wheel goes in the
opposite direction) get someone to hold the other back wheel stationary,
or drop it back onto the ground. If you can still turn the free rear
wheel, albeit with some effort, then the centre diff lock is not
engaged. If you can't turn it at all then the centre lock is engaged.
If the tests above suggest that neither the rear nor centre diff-locks
are engaged then I'm officially puzzled!
However if the clutch has been changed then either the engine or the
gearbox have been shifted, most likely the latter, and the CDL and/or
its wiring may have been disturbed. Given the symptoms you describe and
the history of the vehicle this sounds the most likely explanation to
me.
You are quite right that if you don't have a manual switch on the dash
for the CDL it is wired to engage automatically when in low range, and
this is electrically actuated by a switch on the transfer case. However
let's worry about that if and when you have managed to diagnose the
problem.
Incidentally your original post referred to a sticky 2nd gear. This is
a standard "feature" of the manual box, and is worse in cold weather
and/or when the gearbox is still cold. As someone else said changing the
oil to a multigrade (the 1996 user manual suggests 75w90 and a common
suggestion is Castrol VMX-M) can help a lot, but there is no absolute
cure - the gearbox in these trucks was originally designed for a bus,
and it shows!
2nd gear in these boxes ranges from "sticky when cold, but OK once warm"
(as I'm lucky enough to have) to "impossible except when stationary" -
and it probably depends on prior driving habits giving more or less wear
on the synchro hubs. The cheapest solution is to learn to double
de-clutch when changing down into 2nd!
Hope this helps.

I have a scanned in page from the official hand-book for my 1996 80
series that I tried to send as an attachment to the list, but it failed
to arrive.
If yours is an 80 series it will be the same, so here are the
dimensions:
Overall length 4820mm (4840mm with winch)
Overall width 1830mm, or 1930mm if you have 275/70R tyres
Overall height 1875mm, or 1890mm if you have 275/70R tyres, 1935mm with
roof luggage carrier, 1950mm with tyres and carrier.
There's more, but that should do it.
If you want me to send you the scanned in image drop me an email
address.

hi julian - i wondered why you keep inviting me up... :)
regards graham
ps bearings all arrived safely thanks.
an rbgan was a fantastic relatively cheap piece of kit smaller than a
laptop, which allowed satellite connection from anywhere in africa.
you just connected it to thelaptop via usb, switched it on and it told
you roughly where the satellie was, and you simply turned it and
tilted the lid until you had signal - and hey preso... you could ip
phone or e-mail, or build your website if you were rich enough.
sadly, it has been replaced with bgan which is more cumbersome, more
expensive, and just not a cool...
Fred - as a born and bred zimbo, one of these days we need to get
together for a chat, as i'd love to know what you have been upto in
gods paradise.
all the best

hi Fred, gary, and jeff
interesting to see all the zimbo connections.
well, my family are from the hartley/chegutu area - my g grandfather
opened up the cotton industry in that area. my father was a doctor
with rio tinto, so although from a farming family we grew up on mines.
home for me was a small fantasy world which really existed - goes by
the charming name "eiffel flats". as a mine it was called cam and
motor mine - in its day the richest gold mine in the world!! the big
town near us was gatooma/kadoma.
i went to school at falcon (1979-82), so got to know both bullies and
plumtree very well. :)
my favourite spots in the country were inyanga, wankie and mana...
i remember seeing my first rich tobacco farmer drive up in his brand
new 1991 landcruiser gx. it was the most beautiful car i'd ever seen,
and i decided then that i would get one.... we drove it around the
farm, through the irrigation ditches etc and tried to get it stuck...
great fun :)
sadly, i have to work.. so cheers for now.
