electrics and now the exhaust

Hi All
The electrics are still misbehaving but I have not had the time to
investigate it properly so will have to live with the wild swinging
needles.
But now its getting expensive as the front down pipe has fractured
completely off between the flexi coupling and the pipe running off under
the car. Also the big box is full of holes and the pipe that runs over
the rear axle is swiss cheese too. So decided to bite the stainless
bullet and going for the Longlife option. They have a shop in Battersea
and will replace the thing up to the turbo for 600ish ouch!!!!!!!! But
it is Stainless and has a lifetime warranty. So no more holes unless I
create them myself
So the question is how big a bore and more importantly, do I go for the
go faster tail pipe that sounds like a phantom jet taking off on full
afterburners!!!!!!!!!
All the best

Simon,
I would be asking myself a few questions;
How much is a Toyota replacement, how long would that last?
How much is a custom mild steel unit with increased bore from a local
supplier, how long would one last?
How long am I going to keep the vehicle?
I have a local supplier that does custom mild steel, don't think they do
stainless but they are very reasonable. Never been very interested in
stainless since someone in the trade explained the boxes fail internally in
time. I suppose if the warranty is lifetime that's not an issue - on the
otherhand damage from rocks can't be there problem and will be a more
expensive repair.

Sorry to hear that the gremlins are still active.
"They have a shop in Battersea ..." if it is the place just south of
the railway bridge on Queenstown Road think twice. Or at least don't
part with your money until you are satisfied.
I had the exhaust on our Passat replaced with a stainless steel one
there and the bloody thing made the most horrible noise afterwards.
Once they had our money nothing would persuade them to do anything about
it, and their parting shot was "sue us then".
On the positive side the exhaust was still on the (petrol) vehicle 13
years later when we sold it, and still making a horrible noise....

Maybe the "horrible" noise is the tuned pipe that is designed to sound
like an F1 car leaving the pits??? You are just not sophisticated
(chavy) enough to realize this. But I will take on board what you are
saying and maybe they have learnt something about customer services in
the 13 years? Warren will be advising me tomorrow and I will ask him
about his customer complaints policy.....

New Centre Opens at Battersea.
]Longlife are pleased to announce that their newest centre at Battersea is
]now open. This brings the number of Longlife Centres to seven, reinforcing
]the position of Longlife as the UK=92s leading premium quality bespoke
]exhaust brand.
]
]Longlife Battersea is situated outside the congestionzone just
]across the Chelsea Bridge, and alongside Queenstown Road
]railway station.
]
]Centre Manager is Warren Brehaney who can be contacted on 0870 600 3133.
]
]Either a very old web page or they have taken over an old site? (after the
old owner got sued and went bust?)
My experience with the sound of a stainless exhaust is they can have a tinny
rattle, similar to some new mild steel exhausts but unlike the mild steel
where the noise goes away after a 2K miles as the carbon deposits deaden it
on the stainless the noise remains.

Sounds like the same place, but a different name. It used to be something like "The Stainless Steel Exhaust Centre". It was nearly 17 years ago, so I forget, but if they've changed hands maybe they will be trying a bit harder now.
The noise was nothing to do with stainless steel, and everything to do with a poorly welded baffle which had clearly broken partly free and was vibrating at the most comfortable rev range for the engine. Chavvy? Not really, just annoying.
Actually the Passat was a pretty impressive car: it had a 90bhp 1800cc petrol engine, a very long 5th gear, and easily managed 45+mpg on decent runs, and when we sold it - still going strong, rust-free and not using any oil - for =A3250 it was 17 years old. The sun-roof leaked though!

On our 1993 HDJ80 I have just replaced the mid and back sections, the
front was replaced a few years ago. All sections came from Milner, are
genuine Toyota parts and quite cheap really. I took them down the local
exhaust fitters who charged me =A330 to fit the two new sections. Nice and
simple.
It goes a bit better now and I would guess from the weight of the old
mid box compared to the new one that it was severely coked up. That
suggests to me that having to change the exhaust every now and again may
not be such a bad thing...

Simon,
If it isn't too late you may want to give Frogs Island a call, IIRC (and I
may not) they were doing a full stainless system for =A3450 + VAT (ish). I had
a very quick look at one when I was there earlier this year, it was a 2.5"
system with two or three straight-through boxes. Quality looked ok to me,
but I don't know what grade of stainless was used, or if it was welded with
proper stainless wire etc.etc.

Hi Simon/Toby,
http://www.frogsisland4x4.com/index.htm
I was down there getting a Safari Snorkel and have just bought one of Frogs
Island S/S systems, price was $420 + vat, it's 2.5" and has two straight
through boxes. I was told they had six made in Germany (they only have one
left now) to special order for off-roading so they sit high up underneath
the vehicle, I haven't fitted mine yet but I saw one on a L/Cruiser and it
certainly was well up and out of the way, when I get round to fitting I'll
let you know what it sounds like, Phone number 01235 832100 the person I
dealt with was known as JJ.

Hi there
Thanks for that. Decided to go for it, so bought the last one and found a local garage that charges =A345 hr to fit it!! Will have to live with the lack of performance but frankly considering its age etc I am not that bothered. Instead I am going to spend the money saved on new shocks+springs from froggy 4x4 (boing, boing) and then replace disks front rear from milner and then BeB's maybe at the 45 hr garage if they do a good job on the exhaust??? And finally the birfields as the clicking worries me silly but can't bear the thought of having to pull all my hard work apart again so soon.
All the best

If you local chap doesn't work out you could always take a trip to the Cotswolds, I know a friendly chap down there that knows a thing or two about 80 series ;-))
Cheers,
Julian

Hi Julian,
I hope it's not a certain Joe Boatwright, driven away from South Wales
by angry customers? :))

Hi All,
Well the S/S exhaust has been fitted to my HDJ80 Landcruiser and to my great
surprise it sounds exactly like a standard one, I was expecting a hollow
pinging sort of sound, and louder as it has one less box in the system.
