emmisions

Hi Guys
I had the cruiser go through the usual 2 year NCT test over here in Ireland.
She passed everything and its quite a strict test to the point that if the number plates are not the one and only ones that are allowed it will fail.
Anyway do any of you have emmisions results for your cruisers so that I can compare my results with them.
There is the legal limit of 3.0 and my cruiser had 0.65 but I dont know what this figure represents.
They really rev the hell out of the engine while testing and being in a small totally enclosed space the sound was quite loude and powerful compared to when they tested a car just after the cruiser.

The figure is the smoke emission test, smoke being the carbon particles in
the exhaust gas. The level is set buy the EU and the same in the UK, 3 for
turbo diesels and 2.5 for non-turbo. The units for the reading are a little
strange m-1 (little hard to show in plain text). Some searching suggests is
it molar volume but I cant find much on it.
I don't know why they can't use something simple like grams/m3, that is the
kind of measurement used in research papers. You are right, if they used a
measurement people could easily understand it would help with awareness.
Particle emissions from road transport seem to account for most of the small
particles present in the air, not just exhausts, brakes and tires also
create fine dust, one reason I hate spending too much time in London is the
way you and your clothes get so dirty.
0.65 is very good for a turbo diesel.
How did the brake test come out, the results should include ovality and
balance. The UK MOT includes those but all you normally get is a pass /
fail although perhaps that has change with computerisation. I wish the MOT
was like the NCT - vehicles over 30 years old are excempt! (Although perhaos
in retrospect that is a little scary)

Hi Malcolm
The brakes passed just fine even with the foot pedal hopping a bit so it
must not effect the braking power just the feel of not being smooth.
I did replace the complete hand brake cable a few months ago because with it
being an Auto I dont use the handbrake and so it corroded.
I just thought that it would be easy to compare the result of the emmisions
with that of a car, so many ppm etc.
As you say I still dont know what the figures mean other than its good but
would like to know.
cheers
