Engine running valve adjustment.

I've just seen a clip of an early car assembly line where an opo was adjusting the valve clearances with the engine running before the engine was put into the car. Why, I guess it's quicker as you don't have to turn the crank by hand. Now back in the 50's my dad used to take the cover off our Morris Minor with a hot engine running and adjust the valves. He let me have a go and it was remarkably easy. I never adopted it though. Anyone heard of this?

Yes, I've done it that way back in the 60's and 70's, and it worked well . Although, I wouldn't like to try it on my, 2 valves per rocker, 24 valve LC 100. :)

Yeah, I sort of knew that, just taking the p***. :icon-biggrin:
Once contemplated trying it on my old Escort when I had it running with the valve cover off but didn’t look any easier or worth the hassle with the rockers bouncing up an down. Virtually impossible on the 24v FT I would say with the over complicated valve bridge/rocker adjusting procedure.

Sorry I just couldn't resist it, as thats the same sort of thing I would say, with tongue in cheek.

Gussed you were pulling his plonker, just thought I'd join in the frivolity, hope you didn't mind. :laughing-rolling:

Yes, over complicated or what, and what a palaver to get to them.

Yes good thing I've got an elastic plonker with no nerves. lol

Only really suitable for early/simple pushrod engines with exposed rockers. But to see this method used on a prewar production line surprised me as I thought my Dad had made this method up.

Have you seen that vid of a guy changing the fan belt on a VW Beetle while it was running ??

I'll have to do a search - its quite amusing.

Bob.

Used to do some of the OHV Vauxhall engines running, used to fit points back then too Haha

Points cost 50 New Pence, ECU cost £1500, points, any old Tom, Dick or Harry could adjust, ECU non adjustable, execpt by Bill Gates, points, rotor arm, dis cap easily fixed by the side of the road, ECU broken, tow to main stealer, wait 3 days for replacement, points unhackable, ECU hackable by car thieves, and on, and on.

Points. Yes is was always the points, or ign timing faulty. After Saturday lunch, " I must go out and adjust the points and check the ign timing, I'll be back in time for the Black and White Minstrel Show".

Nothing wrong with magneto ignition either. My first trials bike had it as did an old outboard I had. Magneto and points, not an awful lotto go wrong.

There was a Magneto in X Men, and he worked well to, and wolverine had a fantastic set of points.:)

I work with people who've never seen a carburettor never mind know what a set of points are!! I'd like to say they're good with electrical stuff but they're not!!
