So was looking for something to do today and found Purton ship wrecks so thought it was worth a trip out.

I do love a bit of history.

So it's about 15 mins off the motorway if anyone is heading to the south west and wants a good stop that a bit more interesting then the services

Seems unlikely the gravy train swallowed up millions on that project  maybe its the graveyard of common sense to :icon-smile:

Looks a great place to visit either way thanks for posting Stu

Interesting stuff thanks, and good pics....

An interesting place that Stu, and is that the remains of a concrete ship in one of your photos?

There aren’t too many of those around, they were mostly experimental builds undertaken between the wars. Some concrete canal barges were built too.

Nice one...

The first civil engineering firm I worked with (Sir Owen Williams and Partners) were very long established, and they had (years previous) done a lot of experimental design work on thin-wall reinforced concrete structures, specifically on boat, barge and ship designs.

That would be before they invented steel then

Sort of, or more like when they realised that concrete was about 1/4 of the price, and the average lifespan of ships in wartime was probably measured in months not years :?

Cheers Stu, that looks like a great place to visit, unfortunately it looks like it would involve quite a bit of walking which is beyond my capabilities these days, I can't walk more than about 50 paces without needing to rest, it's very frustrating and limiting in what I can do.

It was to bad Chas but further then 50.paces.

I think it was less the half a mile from the car park
