EPC - how?

Morning all,
Does anyone have the Toyota EPC installed and working correctly on a
reasonably modern pc?
I have used it in the past, after a considerable struggle with the
installation, but since a format and operating system update on my Dell 370
I just cannot get the installation to work. I have searched the internet and
found a couple of versions of 'this is how to do it' - but it isn't you
know!
If you have done this install recently please share the secrets.... I have
spent several hours trying to crack this using 2 sources of EPC info but to
no avail and its really beginning to annoy now!
Thanks,
John

Hey John

I found getting the EPC setup to be tricky as well- you have to read the txt file in one of the folders to get proper instructions- but basically ou install the program first=2C then install the databases.

A far easier way is to to use the online EPC at www.toyodiy.com !

Hello James,
Thanks for the reply. I have tried following the inbuilt instructions but
not too successfully I'm afraid.
I did use the online EPC once, just to check it out, but I had forgotten all
about it. Thank you for reminding me.

John

Believe you will get a message an error message like 'not enough disk space'
even though you have ten trillion MB's on the disk.
To work around it I just installed it onto a usb stick and then copied the
files back over to my harddrive, and it works good on Vista (64 bit).
It only seem to install in older formatted disks (16 bit FAT).
Is there a new version available yet, I heard it on two DVD's now instead of
two cd's?
Martin.

I had been expecting the 'insufficient space' error after reading about it
somewhere on the internet but it never occurred. My problem is loading the
data in the CD SETUP procedure, despite trying all possible permutations of
settings!
I will try the usb stick routine later, if I get time, and assuming the
blood pressure has fallen back to survivable levels. ;-)
Thanks for the input Martin,
John

Hi John,
The trick with the EPC is to get the program installed first and then
when you go to the CD setup screen and then select the area that you
want to install.
So for example select the 'European Area Version', tick the box and
then use the Add button to add the A1, A2, B1, B2, etc disks to the
list selecting Hard Disk when you select the disk name - add them all
now, don't try to add one disk to the list and then press F10 because
it won't work.
Once you have added all the disks that you have to the list, press F10
and it should prompt you for each CD it requires in order.
That's about the main issue that I have found - the order that you
install the CDs.

Hello Julian,
Thanks for that information. No further forward though unfortunately. I
think I must have tried every combination and permutation possible with this
set-up now! I have collected three versions over the years and none of them
will load onto this machine since it was updated. It is really annoying as I
have used the EPC for a long time now although I admit I always found it a
challenge to get working!
I think this is fast becoming a health hazard so I'm going to leave it for a
while - I must have spent 12 hours or more in the last 3 days fighting with
it! I must say that so far this is the only Toyota product I have found to
have a problem in about 20 years of Toyota ownership! I suppose a genuine
EPC CD set may well solve that too - all the versions I have had have come
via the internet so I shouldn't really lay the blame on Toyota should I?
Thanks to everyone who has tried to help. I will keep the emails handy and
perhaps have another attempt in a week or so. Meanwhile I will use that
online version if and when I need any parts or information.
Regards,
John

Hi John,
Before you give up 100%, on each try have you deleted the original
install and started again?
If not, I suggest that you do that. Here are a few other notes to
consider.
Run the setup from the WIN982K directory on the program disk - ignore
the other installations.
If you have several copies of the program disk, run the setup in the
WIN982K folder that has the newest GCDROM.CAB file.
It is up to you where you install the program and data files. I store
the program files on my C Drive and then the data on my D drive
although have no problems installing both on my C drive.
Select the Standalone option (unless you want to attempt the
Client/Server option).
During the installation you might get warnings that some files being
copied are 'not newer' (i.e. older) than files on your computer ?
always choose to keep the existing one (rather than replace it with the
older one).
Good luck.

Morning Julian,
Yes I have removed all trace of previous installations for each new attempt,
unless of course there is something being left in the registry which is
causing problems. Perhaps I will check there and have a cleanup if
necessary. I am aware of the implications of dabbling in the registry but
it's a matter of common sense mainly. (WARNING WARNING - COMMON SENSE NOT
FOUND...)
I will sort through and find the latest version GCDROM.CAB file - that
sounds like a good suggestion, thanks.
I haven't given up completely, I'm just in the phase of 'slowly subsiding
blood pressure' for a week or two! I find it often helps to leave these
problems for a while and make a fresh approach later. It is sometimes
obvious at that stage what has been going wrong. It's a bit like never
seeing your own spelling mistakes until you read your efforts later 'in
print' as it were....
Thanks for all the suggestions, I will report any successes a little later.
Best Regards,
John
