Excess anti freeze kills Landcruiser head gasket?

In preparation for a month working in Sweden, I pulled about 1.5 litres of
coolant from my '97 1fz-fe yesterday and added extra anti-freeze.
24 hours later, it's lying in the workshop with a blown head gasket....
Someone has commented that too high an anti-freeze content can kill the
gaskets. Has anyone heard of that?
Panic on now to get it rebuilt in time for tomorrow night's ferry crossing.
Bugger.
Here's hoping work goes better:

Poorly sick 97 1FZ-FE.

Not heard that Neill, anti freeze is not as good a heat conductor as water
so very concentrated anti freeze will dissipate less heat but I would be
very surprised if you had overheated in this weather, you would have seen
the temp gauge climb as well.
Other thoughts - air lock, also check the pump is OK.
I have a handy optical device that checks anti freeze concentrations and
gives an indication of what protection is still available, uses refraction,
seen them on the net for around =A335.

Looking on the bright side - least you hadn't left yet, pessimistic twist,
probably cheaper to get fixed outside the UK.
I wonder if the coolant had been a little low and when you filled it up (to
the correct level) you removed some "expansion" space and increased the
operating pressure.
That said I have always understood the coolant pressure in the block is
normally higher than the rad, due to the effect of the pump and restriction
of the stat, never measured it myself but it is supposed to be significant
as higher pressure coolant boils at a higher temp, so preventing local
boiling at surface contacts. (One reason for not taking the thermostat out
in the tropics.)

Hi Malcolm,
I always understood that the anti freeze aided with the cooling.
On a side note, the perceived wisdom from other lists is that the Toyota
anti freeze is some of the best that you can get and it's not worth wasting
time on other makes.
