Exhausts - steel or stainless steel when overlanding?

It is a well know fact that stainless steel exhausts will last longer
than a standard steel one, if you are going to be doing a lot of off
roading, either here or abroad, when the exhaust is likely to get a bit
of a hammering, wouldn't it make more sense to stick to steel because
it would be easier to repair in the boonies.

I suppose it doesn't make a great deal of a difference whether it's
mild or stainless steel. If it gets bashed and needs to be repaired,
like a section being broken off, stainess steel can still be welded
(or fixed) with mild steel wire. It's just that it will no longer be
a 100% SS and the money spent on it won't look like a good investment.
