Exhausts, Wheel bearings, the price of Oil Filters etc...

Hi Gareth
Will also be keen to hear how the installation will go as I too am in the
market for a new exhaust. Will be watching out for your posts.
To all
Now that I have had the new starter in the car for a week I can confirm that
it is working fine and no issues at all. However, I have now noticed a
distinct clunk on firm braking coming from the passenger side front wheel.
This has been the worst wheel for oil leaks and I suspect that the wheel
bearing is going. I have not had a chance to jack up the beast but will
have a go tonight and then wiggle it top and bottom to see if there are any
tell tale movement. I expect there will be as if you rock the wheel whilst
car is planted firmly on the ground there is more noise than the other side!
Ooops sounds like more trouble.....
Anyone notice their idle speed dropping in this hot weather? Mine is all
over the shop and I though at one point it was going to stall. Will tweak
the idle speed screw and see if she is happier.
You will love this, went to Halfrauds to get an oil filter as Toyota were
miles away and I just could not be asked on a hot Sat morning and can you
imagine they wanted over ?18.00 for a crap pattern one. So off to Toyo
Sidcup and bought a real one for ?15.00! While I was in Hals I bought lots
of their own brand oil with 1/3 off, don't know if it is any good but its
got to be better than the oil thats in the car at the mo!

Hi Simon,
According to my recent research, Halfrauds' semi-synthetic oil is friendly
to 1HD-T bearings (very low magnesium, high calcium content), however the
fully synthetic is not. I was prompted to check when their fully synth was
half price recently. I don't have the details in front of me but as I recall
the oils are produced for Halfords by Comma (or similar), I'll post full
details if I can find them.
As recently discussed genuine Toyota oil filters with their built-in by-pass
filter are a much safer bet than pattern ones.
You may want to sort out your wheel bearings sooner rather than later as any
slack will lead to excess wear on your inner axle seal - when this fails
you're facing a bigger and messier job. (Though if you have oil leaks this
may already have happened).
Best of luck

Hi Toby
Thankfully, I bought the semi and I was aware of the oil filter situation so
was tempting fate by buying a dodge one. But thank you for the advice and
you are right the seals will need to be done. I shall go onto Milners and
get the bits.
All the best

Hi Simon,
Wheel bearings don't normally clunk when you brake unless the wheel is
about to fall off! Do the brakes need pumping if you've not used them
for a few corners (play at the bearing allows the pads to get pushed
away from the disc) or feel strange in any way?
A clunk is more likely to be a worn bush IMHO.
Best regards,
Jon.

Hi Simon,
As Jon has pointed out a clunk under breaking is most likely to come from
suspension bushes.
If you are actually getting oil weeping/leaking from the steering ball, then
this is a bit more serious - it generally means that the inner oil seal has
gone and the diff oil is leaking into the Birfield/CV, diluting the grease
and then leaking out of the ball joint.
You will need to get both sides of the front axle stripped down and
inspected. The seals will certainly need replacing which will cost ?30 +
VAT for the seal kit (from Milners) to do both sides and then ?8.50 + VAT
(from memory) for the inner seal which is best bought from Toyota.
Whilst the axle is apart you may see other problems like worn wheel
bearings, worn knuckle/steering bearings, worn Birfield and worn
driveshafts.
I am in the process of doing Tony Steele's LC - he had loose wheel bearings,
but when I stripped it down I noticed worn break disks, worn knuckle
bearings as well as slightly worn wheel bearings. In all it will come out
to around ?260 for parts and then 10-12hrs labour.
If you already know that the birfields, wheel bearings, etc are knackered
then it is a quicker job since there will be less cleaning of parts, which
takes the longest to do - we swapped everything over on the front of
Renate's 80 in a day.
Does the changes in idle speed correlate to the aircon pump running - when
the pump runs it will slow the engine down, but the engine should increase
the revs to compensate - if it isn't then you need to check the settings - I
don't have my brain with me at the moment, so forget what needs adjusting,
but will probably remember at midnight tonight ;-0
