Hi all
Following up on a previous post, how do I read the fault codes from my 2005 prado?
I don't have a gizmo for this, so what's recommended (keep it inexpensive please)

I'm in the UK so prefer to buy from a UK supplier :)

Thanks
Charles

Three options that have worked for me:

1. Toyota Techstream - you put this on your computer and buy a cable off ebay. This is probably the cheapest and most flexible way to get all the data from all the onboard systems. You can also program keys, injector compensation codes etc if you ever need to. You might need a bit of computer savvy to get it setup and working right.

2. Denso Intelligent Tester2 (IT2). A self contained unit that pretty much does what techstream does, Expensive and probably not worth it IMHO!

3. Autel MaxiDiag MD 805. I got this to scan by LC before I bought it and it did a good job and can read all the systems. Don't know if they're still available, but there's probably an equivalent. Think it was about £150

There are probably other options that will work, but beware that generic OBD2 readers tend not to work on these 120's - especially the older ones. I've had no success on my UK 2006 model with bluetooth dongles - I've tried MotoDia ELM327 and an Autophix 3210. Theres videos on YouTube of the Autophix working with other 120's though.

If you search on here there's other info about this!

That's really helpful - thanks.
I've had a look at a few cables on Amazon for £25-35 and they pretty much all say up to Windows 7. I have Windows 10, so not sure what to do on that one.
Also, is there an option to plug something in which will talk bluetooth to my phone for readings on the go?

Told you I was new to this :)

Does the software itself cost anything?

I've dedicated a windows 7 box to Techstream (just a cheap toughbook for £100 odd) so I've only tried it on windows 7. I think others have got it working on windows 10, but you'll have to search around for the details.

I've had no luck with bluetooth adapters, but I think they do work on some cars. Theres a guy in OZ who has an autophix working, but it didn't work for me. I wanted to use one to try and get some details up on a android headunit, but it wasn't to be. Have a look at this youtube:

I think the older cars, and the UK cars in particular are a bit more fussy in what they will talk to!

Don't worry mate, we're all learning :) The software came with the cable for me on ebay, and was about £20 or so. Not sure what the official position is or if it was even the latest version of the software - but then the 120 isn't new either, so it was plenty good enough!

I use techstream and for the cable and software from ebay with it running on a win10 laptop. It's a bit tricky to get it working, but there is a thread on here with some useful links.
