Hi,
I have just bought my first TLC and thought I would say hello to the list.
I have a '96 HDJ80 4.2TD VX. I have had Land Rovers up to now, the last
being a 3.9 Range Rover Classic. The (un)reliability of this was one of the
main things that made me look at Landcruisers!!!
I am looking to fit an OME lift kit, Safari snorkel and ARB front bumper.
Where in UK would you recommend I get these from?
Thanks

Hi Lubo
Thanks for the welcome.
ARB are an Austrailian company that make 4x4 accessories. Take a look at

Hi Ian,
Welcome to the list. Where in Hants are you?
Are you looking to fit the kit yourself or get someone else to do it?
If you are just looking to get the kit your best bet is to shop around for
the best price. All the ARB/OME kit comes through the same distributor so
try anbody like Devon 4x4, Frogs Island, Surrey Off ROad for the best
price. Unfortunately few of them hold enough TLC kit in stock so you may
have to wait for some items.
On the suspension front, do make sure you choose the right combination of
springs and dampers for the loads you are likely to be carrying. If you
want me to email over OME's selection chart I can dig it out for you.

Hi Julian,
I am in Bordon.
I would very much like a copy of the OME chart. The plan for the
Landcruiser is very much dual purpose. It will be used as a road car as
well as for green laning and pay & play days. It will also go on occasional
overland trips to places like the Sahara (been once - loved it - going
again) . I do not plan to fit a winch but will be having ARB front end
protection. General loads will be light but the overland trips will be
heavy. Looking for best compromise - 851 / N73 fronts, 860 / N74E rears ?
Thanks

The ARB's are popular but TJM also make bumpers (I have a T15 which has
survived 3 significant impacts and many minor ones) and I think someone
on here has found a place that will fabricate bumpers for Landcruisers
unless my memory is playing tricks.
If you're going to the expense of fitting an aftermarket bumper I'd
suggest one capable of having a winch fitted is a good idea just in case
you change your mind about not having one ;-)
Best regards,
Jon.

Hi Ian,
Ah, I remember there - many years ago I did a short stint working for
SCATS out of Holybourne demoing tractors and combines all around the
area.
I have stuck it up on the site at
http://www.landcruisers.info/ome.html. Sorry it isn't too clear, but
should be good enough.
The tricky thing is getting the compromise. I have heavy duty
suspension on my 80 which was going to have winch etc added later, but
now won't on this vehicle. The 2.5" lift looks more like 4" without
the weight of a winch and bumper or a full boot, and the ride is quite
harsh with very little give in the springs.
However it really comes into it's own when fully loaded. On family
trips to Scotland I really get the benefit from the suspension and also
around Salisbury Plain last year when I have a full toolkit in the
back.

Hi Julian
Thanks for the chart. Opens up a whole can of worms! Has anyone tried J
springs? The footnote says only for off road use - do they mess up the on
road behaviour that badly? Can the castor correction bushes correct enough?
The rear J springs appear to be longer but "lighter" than the heavy duty
rears. Would this help cure the harsh ride? Soooo much to learn!!

Hi Ian and Welcome,
I notice you live in/near Bordon, I often see Land Rovers. and "the
like" being washed down in the local garage after what appears to be a
"good day's off roading"! So...... Are there any good off-road tracks in
Bordon you know of? I'm relatively close to you in Portsmouth.

Rob

Hi Rob,
There are a few lanes in the area, mainly around the Devils Punchbowl. I
would guess most of the things you have seen come from Pay and Play days on
the MOD land. Several clubs use the land the largest probably being the
AWDC. The last event one was Dec 27th. I collected my LC on Boxing day so
I could take it.

That's a nice area you're in there, some lovely lanes around Alton,
Haslemere, Midhurst and Petersfield, keep you entertained for a while.
Water Lane out of Alton is a rare treat ;-) Very tempted to get down
there again very soon before NERC closes a few of them by Midhurst.
Best regards,
Jon.

Hi Ian,
Most people just go for the 2.5"/50mm lift for overlanding, which
doesn't need too many mods and you can also get away with not fitting
the castor correction kit.
If you want to go for a greater lift Slee Off Road in the states
provide a number of kits. You can of course make up your own like Jon
Wildsmith has, however their site does provide a useful guide:
