Fresh Water Flow Rates - Overlanding

Alright there guys
I've concluded my research into and found some great systems at OK
prices at http://www.purewateronline.co.uk
Have narrowed selection down to 2 units:
1. Flow Rate: 1.9 litres per minute. AVG Capacity:1900 litres.
2. Flow Rate: 3.8 litres per minute. AVG Capacity:3800 litres
Would be very interested to hear if anyone has a water purification
system fitted to their LC, what flow rate you have and do you find it
sufficent or insufficent.
I'm kind of thinking 1.9litres would be enough and would help conserve
water. But if your're having a shower, there's nothing worse than
sitting under a dribble... I'll have 120ltr water storage capacity
Any experience gained in the field or insight appreciated...
Cheers
Niall

Hi Niall,
Well, why would you be using filtered water for a shower ?
It's a waste of energy. And for the price of these things one buys a lot of
bottled water for drinking which is then readily available where you need it
: where you are sitting driving.
As back up, a portable Katadyn filter should be sufficient, and doesn't take
a lot of space.
But this is just my opinion of course !

Good to hear from our man down in Senegal.
RE> why would you be using filtered water for a shower ?
Seems mad I agree, but rather than have separate storage for drinking,
washing dishes, shower etc. I've decided to keep my water management
system simple: have one dirty tank of water, with everything that comes
out of it filtered for microbiological and chemical contaminants.
Energy useage could be a problem but have the extra batteries so might
as well put them to use.
RE> for the price of these things one buys a lot of bottled water for

Agreed. But fresh, clean water on tap will be a nice luxury :) Plus I
won't have millions of plastic bottles to dispose of....
Re> portable Katadyn filter
Have used them before when rafting in Turkey. They are the business!
RE> But this is just my opinion of course !
Earned at the coal face, and not taken lightly my friend.

I'm with Cedric on this - you may have gone what you call simple but I would go
even simpler.
Slightly different I know but way back in 1994/5 I was filming in Sarajevo,
Bosnia during the war when the city was under siege and in Jan '95, winter,
-25c we had no hot water at all and for 3 weeks no running water at all so had
to use what we'd saved. I 'washed' using baby wipes and used 4 plastic 35mm
film containers for cleaning my teeth each day. Every 3-4 days I treated myself
to a hair wash. Nice...!
Important for you that you keep hydrated so drink lots of water, not coffee or
orange juice and don't be tempted to run with a/c if you have it. Quickest way
to dehydrate....

Cheers for that Jeremy :)
If yer man from the life of Brian heard that story he'd be sure to say: "4 plastic 35mm film containers for cleaning your teeth each day!? - You lucky B%$=A3&@ ! - Fancy having teeth!"
But I'm hell bent on having a bit of comfort, and am going to fit the water system. It is a holiday after all...
Cheers
Niall
PS - Re> Important for you that you keep hydrated
That's what the fridge is for - beer!

Niall,
One way of getting purified water is boiling it at 100 deg. C.
Another, as Cedric said, is buying it in 2L bottles. Anything else is
only for highly hypothetical scenarios. You wouldn't use bottled water
for a shower, so why bother with a filter?
In extreme conditions 120L of water will make one person entirely self
sufficient for up to 30 days. You are unlikely to experience such
conditions barring a breakdown in the middle of the Sahara or a
natural disaster.
Ever considered stocking up with French wine instead of water? :)

Hello well then that is not so bad at all really. I worked with some
guys in Paris who smelled so bad you might think they had strong
cheese in their pocket.
I ask myself why this email did go to my spam fiche?

Sorry, you've lost me. What would you do with this filtered dirty

Nothing is wasted out there -the locals are the real masters of
recycling! Watch and learn ...

Re> Sorry, you've lost me. What would you do with this filtered dirty

What I mean is, will have one tank for water. Water goes into this tank
from well or other source. This is the dirty water I refer to. When I
say dirty I mean not filtered.
When it comes out of the filter it is "clean". And ready to drink, clean
dishes, teeth, bums or whatever.
RE> Watch and learn ...
There'll be pplenty of learning that's for sure!!
It's interesting that the feedback from the horses mouths indicate that
the water system is not necessary.... hmmmmnnnn
Ah well...
Cheers

Niall,
OK. I get it, but it sounds like overindulgence. Clean water on tap
won't be such a nice luxury. It's available where humans and animals
are. In most parts it's fresh enough to use for anything except
drinking straight from the well. For this I'd suggest boiling it
first.
For bottled water, consider a light but sturdy container to keep the
bottles in as they are easy to puncture.

Funny thing is, if your hair is clean you feel clean all over! At least that
was my theory, but I did resort to a severe haircut...

SNIP
If I might add from the perspective of those of us that get to out-of-the-way places.
Boil it by all means, but don't just bring it to the boil. The FAO recommend keeping it boiling for 30 minutes to eliminate all organisms, especially the amoeba which causes a nasty form of dysentery. That is a very long time to boil, but at least give it a good few minutes before turning off the heat.

The trouble with boiling water is the amount of gas that is uses - at the end of the day a decent filter system is expensive but probably the best way to go.

Jeff,
A kelly kettle will probably boil the same quantity of water quicker
than a gas burner. But a low-tech solution is normally the last thing
to preoccupy our Western minds ;-
