front axle oil seals

Hi all,
I decided to replace the oils seals before (rather than during) my
forthcoming trip. I have a set of seals from Milner which I've never
used before. My question is: will they last 10k km or should I
urgently get the genuine Toyota article?

Assuming you mean the inner axle oil seals... As you know one of ours went
after very few ks and it was a Milner seal... Hardened rubber. Get the
Toyota seal. Julian sent me one when we were in Spain and when you put the
two in the palm of your hand there is no contest. The Toyo part looks as
though it will last which cannot be said for the Milner part. I can get you
the part no if you need but I'm sure you have it. I kept the packaging in
one spares wolf box.
Incidentally, I think the other seal may be on the way out, again a
rubberised Milners one.
Anyone any idea how long these seals should last?
It may be an idea to publish a list of spares that should be Toyota only ie
these seals, as not everything from Milners does the business as we know.

Jeremy,
Thanks. As the front axle is now in a state of dissasembly, and Jemca
Toyota needs three days to obtain the seals for me, I'll have to keep
my fingers crossed the Milner seals won't do the usual act too soon.
But I'll try to get a spare set just in case.
Get well soon!

Roman,
I can back up Jeremy's experience with the inner axle oil seal from Milners.
I have heard of several other instances of these failing prematurely, though
if I recall correctly Jon Wildsmith has had better luck with them. I suspect
this is to do with the precise alignment of the axle casing and knuckle, and
the amount of play in the swivel bearings and cv to driveplate splines; more
wear/play here allows more movement of whole cv and hence more movement of
the inner axle where it passes through the seal. The relatively inflexible
Milners seal can't cope with much (any?) movement, whilst the Toyota one has
a much more flexible design. This wear/play/alignment issue may be why
you'll hear from some people that their spindle bushes are completely
untouched while others will see wear in them. It may also be why Toyota
extended the driveplate splines from '93ish (?) onwards.
As for the other front axle seals (swivel and hub) from Milners, these seem
to be fine and are certainly much cheaper than OEM.

Following on from what Jeremy has posted, all the Milner seals will
last as long as the Toyota ones (many are Toyota ones anyway) except
for the inner axle seal (?8.50 from Toyota).
I think the key difference with the inner axle seal is that the Toyota
ones have a more flexible inner ring which allows for more movement
from the spinning halfshaft which works better when the CV becomes worn
causing greater movement or the halfshaft start to get a grove in it
where the seal rubs.
THe rest of the seals aren't under so much pressure so are less of an
issue.
Also, obviously one of the keys to avoiding problems is to ensure that
the diff breaters are working properly and the diff is correctly filled
- I suspect that Jeremy's main problem was an over filled diff.
Something else to bear in mind is that I think Toyota are quoting
around ?180 for all the seals on one side of the axle as opposed to
Milner doing a set for both sides for around ?30!

Hi Toby,
Actually the only alignment issues come from wear. With earlier LCs you
could adjust the alignment with shimming, but with the 80, whilst shims
are still used they are only used on the top swivel for adjusting the
pre-load on the bearings.
Roman - are you going to be checking/changing the knuckle bearings?

Julian,
No, I think I won't have to change them now. They were changed nime
months ago and should be fine. But I have a spare set, plus a set of
steering knuckle pins.

Er yes, probably true... But in my defence I was away filming in the us and
Footloose did the front axles and an additional oil cooler for the a/t
gearbox for me. I probably should have checked the diff level before going
but didn't. Once the seal had gone and oil was sloshing out of the swivel
onto the ground and tyre, I checked the diff level expecting it to need
topping up but oil gushed out.... Hence the over-filling theory.
It might be worth saying that I also had problems on the oil cooler as well.
Just after fitting, on a belt down the motorways of France, one of the
unions going into the cooler was leaking quite badly, quite literally hosing
a/t oil. It was lucky we spotted it so all was resolved on the side of a
French vineyard after a light lunch...Just leaves me to question slightly
the quality control at Footloose who otherwise have a good reputation.
Something I plan to discuss with them, once Paul the guvnor is back from a
trip. Like many, they are LR boys... Even wearing LR fleeces...!

As Julian has already mentioned both our 80's have Milner seal kits
including the inner axle oil seals and have done more than 10k km
without problems. Just be very careful when you fit the inner seals so
they don't get distorted, perhaps the Toyota ones are more forgiving of
this?
Best Regards,
Jon.
