Hi all, Does anyone know what happened to gary 80's breaker? He sold me a duff diff that took me 2 days to fit and cost me £340. Upset to say the least. This is over a year ago and no reply to messages.

Never had any problems with him, got his phone number? What was wrong with the diff?

If it was over a year ago then I doubt he will remember a diff.

Can't say I'm surprised. Not the first time he's sold someone substandard parts and then gone into hiding. What's wrong with the diff? Do you still have the old diff? If it's just bearing, it's a relatively easy and cheap fix.

I'm not surprised either. Having spent a ton of money with him and given plenty of recommendations when I returned something which was the wrong colour I had my number blocked and no replies to emails.
Garry is never wrong, this should be remembered when dealing with him and its worth bearing in mind that returns are at ones own expense, which is ludicrous.

Like Chris says, these things are not difficult to rebuild if the crown wheel and pinion are ok, If you bought a rebuild kit and took it to a reliable transmission specialist it would probably cost less than a S/H unit.

Rebuild it. Then you know where your at.

not taking another chance on something with at least 200000 miles on it.

If you have the old one, rebuild that too and then sell it and you'll most likely be in profit. If the crown and pinion gear are pitted and noisy, well that's a different story. That's a full rebuild. But all of the rest of the bits in there are consumables. Crush spacer and bearings are not expensive. IF the pinion is good and still well set then it's very very simple to swap the main carrier bearings and set up the pre load.

It helps us if you post your location in your sidebar. If you were local to me, I'd help you set it up no problem.

Had both mine fully rebuilt in the uk & then shipped back to me as they were passed their best whining at higher speeds with vibrations.
These parts even being second hand should only be sold as being fully tested to avoid disappointment. Hopefully yours is a simply fix as Chris says sorry to hear about your troubles?

Unfortunately that's not quite all you need. If you put new bearings in the pinion you will have to check the tooth engagement pattern. This will undoubtedly involve shimming the pinion. The bearing that comes out just won't be exactly the same as the one going in and whilst the spacer is there to set bearing preload, there's going to be some jiggery necessary to set the depth. Now, if the diff is on the bench you can actually measure the depth of the head of the pinion which makes selecting the shims that bit easier. Ask me how I know....

If the pinion bearings are good, as I said previously, then setting the side bearing pre load and ring gear back lash is very very easy indeed. It is possible to nip the pinion bearing up a tidge if it is a little light, but to be fair is fairly light to begin with. So as long as it doesn't just spin freely like a roller skate wheel, you're probably not a million miles away.

Hmm, i might spend some time studying the ins and outs of the front and rear diff. Ive got a couple in stock. Might do a complete rebuild for educational purposes..

Happy to join in CG. We're not far from each other. Front is easier I think. I don't have any rear shims, but I have a small library of front ones. I sort of went don the list on Amayama and ordered 1 of each of what I thought were the most likely more common sizes given my experiences of building a few up. I rig to hold the diffs in is very useful too. You need to be able to spin the thing over. You also need a mag stand and a dial gauge. You should have a torque meter that reads inch pounds too. I borrowed one and now I feel I actually know what inch pounds feel like. A couple of large home-made keys are useful for winding up the carrier nuts.

don't think he goes into hiding all over ebay, google, sends out a key ring with each order what are you so perfect in what you do then.

Well I certainly don't misrepresent the goods that I sell Billy, that's for sure.
Garry most certainly does and I have the evidence here in my workshop if you'd like to come and see it. Not exactly as advertised and strangely the pictures supplied somehow managed to miss off the obvious damage that was clear once unpacked. Some have had excellent service, I am sure. But you cannot excuse the piece of crap that I was sold.

By the way, I'm sure it's perfectly possible to be a penny pinching cheapskate but still be completely honest. Andy has helped a great many people out with spares; why should he give his business away for nothing? No one is asking Garry to give things away, but they would perhaps appreciate honesty over what he's selling and some after sales consideration when he gets it wrong.
