fuel additives

Whilst I agree that it probably doesn't do much your reasoning isn't
necessarily true. For example how much venom does a deadly snake inject
to kill it's prey relative to body volume? How much fumes of an acid do
you need to breathe in to make you choke? Extreme examples I know but a
small amount of a compound can potentially make a big difference.
Although I too suspect these additives don't do much good unless you use
them constantly.

My mechanic pours a whole bottle into the fuel filter, then takes it for a drive to get it hot & clean the injectors, and only then takes it for its MOT test.
Clearly he is a believer in the "concentrated is better" theory.

Suggest you have a read of the link shown below - re fuel additives /
Millers Dieselclean and sulphur levels. A quick search on Google using
"millers dieselclean" as your search title brings up quite a few other
articles / threads. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/?f=1&t=5031

I don't know - he just said "injector cleaner". Next time I see him I'll ask.
My experience with additives in the past with previous diesels has been that the money you spend on additive (perhaps ?3 in a tankful) is paid back in improved fuel economy; however that does not seem to have been the case with my LC. Possible reasons:
(1) It's too dilute to do any good in a 90l tank, and I need to spend more to save more. (Bad time of year for that theory.)
(2) My injectors are already so perfectly clean that no improvement is possible. (Bad theory at any time.)
(3) The fuel consumption is so dependent on usage patterns that this masks any saving. (?3 is < 5% of a tankful, and my mpg varies by more than that.)
Personally I tend towards explanation #3 because I'm not regular enough in my (driving) habits. I suspect that these additives are break-even on economic grounds, and possibly offer longer term cleanliness advantages.
The biggest disadvantage is that I tend to stop at pump, fill car to brim, walk in to pay, spot additive on shelf, read label which says "add first so that it mixes", think "oh shit, I filled it to the brim, I'll remember next time", pay basic fuel bill ....
... then repeat the next time. If someone could invent a button on the pump saying "Press here for additive injection" they would make a fortune!

Did any of you read in one of the 4x4 mags recently that one of these
additives was tested and they found recordable differences. The
product was said to be worth the money. I can't remember the mag, I
only read 4x4 or TOR, and I can't remember the product name. Hows that
for being full of information?

Hi Guys
Yes again I have to say THANK YOU for all your honest imput into my cruiser
learning. I think that this is a really great forum fair play to you all.
I am really thinking of a lot of changes in what I do for my cruiser to
prolong its life. I really want to reach the magical 30 years old, not me
silly the cruiser. Im only 21 again at my last birthday. At 30 years old the
annual cruiser road tax goes from 1350 euro at present per year to about 60
euro per year. I am considering taking a trip over to the Uk to get parts
and good oil , like redline or Amsoil. Its amazing but I cannot buy them
here and I either get them shipped over of go over and buy in bulk, either
way it costs more of my euro and I hate that. I am going to see if the
products can be delivered to the port or near, its a start any way. Its crap
that I have to do this and I still think that I am the loner from here to be
on any forums, mad is'nt it, well for me it is. To think I have to source
all the cheap parts and oils from another country makes no sence to me.
The next job that needs doing is the rocker cover gasket again, before I can
change to a different oil. Looking forward to being ripped of again. I can
remember( I know its a rare occasion but it does happen from time to time)
some thing about advice on this gasket like sealent on the corners or
something like that, does any body remember.

Hi John,
You may consider these addresses for parts which are certainly cheaper than
Toyota,

I am not sure where about in Ireland you are, but are there not any other
full synthetic oils available to you there.

Hi Guys
First of all I would like to wish you all the best for your weekend on the
farm, would love to be there but can't.
Secondly I have been looking at fuel additives again and have read so much
conflicting stuff its unbelievable. What do you guys think.
I have read that all fuel comes from a handful of refineries and like when
the BP strike was on it effected 90% of fuel stations even though BP does
not own the 90%..
So if fuel comes from a handful of refineries, it should be all the same
right.
Does a fuel additive really work or do people just use it in the hope that
it does.
I found it impossible to find any really independent evidence that fuel
additives really work other than of course from the people who produce them.
I have seen a brand name delivery fuel tanker deliver to Tesco so is there
any difference.
Can as little as 1ml of additive per 1000mls really make a difference.
Or as some have suggested a good run or revving high when the engine is warm
works well to clean all the parts.
Does an extra boost just before a test like an MOT really do any thing,
like putting a bottle of 500mls in the tank.
I have read adding a certain amount of petrol to diesel would be good , if
so how much and how often.
cheers

Hi
This is my first post on here as I am not sure how to set up the HTML thing
so I hope this is okay.
I went for my MOT the other day. I had let my tank get down to 1/4 and added
an injector cleaner.
I then started to panic as I thought this may effect the emissions for the
MOT.
I spoke to the MOT'er and he said that they test the emissions a few times
if necessary and if they
wont come down they put in an injector cleaner and give the vehicle a fast
run.
This nearly always brings the emissions down to an acceptable level.
I don't know how good these cleaners are but these guys say they are a good
thing.
My emissions have been well below the threshold for five years and this year
they were the lowest
I have ever seen, most probably due to the injector cleaner.

My previous mechanic used to tip a good dose of injector cleaner into the fuel filter before presenting an old diesel for MoT! I use it on mine - about every 3rd tank full. Hard to know whether it does any good or not, but it sails through the MoT emissions test on "fast pass".
Diesel injectors are known to "dribble" if they get gummed up, which leads to discrete drops of fuel landing on the piston head and causing erosion due to the localised heat that can, in the worst case, melt or blow a hole through the piston. So anything which helps to keep them clean and producing a good spray pattern has to be a good thing. The Aussies would say that you should have the injectors serviced every 100,000km - easier said than done in the UK.
I wouldn't add petrol. The quantity you'd have to add would probably cost about the same as injector cleaner, and it can't do the injection pump seals any good.
My wife filled her diesel Zafira with petrol twice in its career: the 2nd time it just about coughed back into life and seemed OK, but then the injection pump failed totally when it was next serviced and air got in as they changed the fuel filter. Cost of injection pump was >> value of car - expensive mistake!
Incidentally I tried the "small dose of acetone improves diesel economy" thing about two years ago, but if it made any difference to mine I couldn't see it. The acetone is dead useful as a solvent for cleaning things though!
I also found a cheap (=A35) fuel magnet on Ebay which I fitted. That too made no difference that I could detect.
