Fuel Efficiency

Dear All,
I am sure this has been asked before so please excuse me for any repetition.
I read in the Turbo efficiency thread about folks getting 29.8 mpg!
I on the other hand in my 80 series am only getting 20mpg, or to put it
another way - 300miles per tank. I am a steady driver and do local miles as
well as the odd run.
I'd be interested to know what mpg other LC80 diesel auto owners are getting
and what maintenance or tweaks can be used to achieve good fuel economy.

When you take roof racks, weight and the like out of the equation ther
is IMHO only one factor that matters - the boot. It al depends on
driving technique.
29.8 mpg ? Not surewho got that but its test trackstuff surely?
I have alwaysgot about 20 outof my cruiser.
Cheers

Mine averages about 27.5 mpg winter and 29.0 summer. That's a long-term
average over 95k miles since I bought it in 2001. It's best ever was
on holiday in France when it got into the (very) low 30s: a combination
of Total Excellium fuel and seriously laid-back driving.
But then it's a 24 valve 1HD-FT, manual gearbox, completely stock
condition (standard tyres, no roof-rack or winch etc). On motorways etc
I tend to set the cruise control at 2400 rpm, which is about 67 mph in
5th gear.
I find that a constant 70mph uses significantly more fuel, not
surprising really since if wind resistance is a function of speed
squared then (70/67) squared =3D 1.09, or 9% more resistance.
Anecdotally the 12 valve 1HD-T engine + auto box is significantly less
economical.

For what it's worth:
1. My 100 series, auto box, 50% motorway at 70 -80mph - about 21mpg, , 50%
local driving - 23mpg.
About 25% of journeys with twin axle trailer (motorway and local) 18 -19mpg
1. My 80 series, 24 valve, manual box. Combination of motorway and local
driving 22.5 - 23 mpg.
Must admit I've reduced my motorway speed recently to around 70mph which is
certainly saving some fuel. Not sure how long this new policy of restraint
will last though.

300 miles per tank seems very thirsty - I get a consistent 325 miles
from a 4.5 petrol, which I thought worked out to about 17 mpg.
You do have a serious roofrack though, and I don't think the 442F auto
does economy any favours at all - I tend to drive it like a manual once
past 30 mph.

Yep it does seem thirsty. Yet Ken and Niall report a similar thirst with
their vehicles.
To be honest I wasn't expecting anything revelationary, but it would be nice
to squeeze and extra 10-15% out of the thing.
I seem to remember simlar consumption pre roof rack, although I never used
it loaded.
Thanks

Dear all,
I wrote to you all earlier in the year regarding my fuel economy:
=B3My 100 series '02 diesel 4.2 is only returning approx 17mpg, it has 70k on
the clock and this is without the aircon on. I don't really see any
improvement in the economy even on a long run, having only seen 19mpg once .
The car runs as clean as a whistle, no smoke on start up and none at all
under hard acceleration. The only time you can see a slight haze is at night
in the rear view mirror under very hard acceleration.=B2
I was trying to find Van Aaken developments to optimise it but they went
bust in January. I did however find one of their staff who is offering
diesel tuning =8Cboxes=B9 for the LC and I had one fitted last week. It has made
quite a difference to say the least! Bags more torque, smoother
acceleration, feels much quicker and seems to be using less fuel. 80 mph now
with only a whisker of throttle. I will know just how much better economy is
when I fill it up this weekend.

be genuine and experienced people)
On another note how much change (if any) do you notice when activating the
power/ect button? I can=B9t detect any difference at all!

Hi Jon,
I don't notice any difference at all. I've tried thrashing it and
watching to see if gear changes happen at different rpm's, but they
don't seem too.
I was wondering if it only makes a difference on petrol engines.
Cheers,

Re: [ELCO] Fuel EfficiencySomething's not right. Are you checking actual
litres/gallons put in the tank against actual recorded mileage ? Running on
standard size wheels ?
I've got the same model, same year, same mileage. I've done 40K miles in
this car and regularly keep an eye on consumption by resetting the mileage
trip when I fill up. I drive hard but have never got below 21mpg (that's on
long motorway trips at 80mph+). I fill up mostly at HGV bunker sites so I
guess it's bog standard diesel.
When I'm a little lighter on the right foot (but not stupidly so) I achieve
23 - 23.5mpg. I rarely use aircon, have roof bars but no roof rack.
Towing a large trailer obviously reduces MPG, but rarely below 19mpg.
Either you've got size 13 feet and wear heavy boots, or you need to get your
fuel system checked out (or maybe you've got a 500 watt sound sytem cranked
up to 10 all the time ?)

Dear Ken, size 11 feet! Wife with smaller feet achieves the same!
The fuel system has been checked 3 times by Toyota (I bought the car in
December from a main dealer with 2 years warranty) they can't find anything
wrong, I don't know how experienced they are at that kind of thing though.
Bog standard car, no big stereo and don't use the aircon much either. I must
say I am a bit pissed off at the consumption, ther's not a lot I can do to
change the car though now diesel has rocketed!

The power button certainly makes a noticable difference on mine - it's
much more willing to kickdown and hangs on to lower gears for longer.
It might not be noticable if you're thrashing it though, because it
seems to affect part throttle changes. After all, normal mode kicks
down and changes up late if you've got your foot on the floor, but the
power mode lets it happen at lower throttle openings.
Whether or not it gets you anywhere quicker is debatable, but it feels
quicker somehow...

Hi Paul,
That's interesting, I never thought of that. Tomorrow I'll check gear
changes at quarter/half throttle.
Cheers,
Andy
