Fuel tank breathers

A while ago I asked about the fuel tank breathers - I eventually found it, it runs from above the back of the tank to a small filter on the underside of the body with a further pipe running from the filter into the cross member behind the tank.
It appears that muddy/silty water can build up in the crossmember, blocking the breather quite effectively.
Next time you are under your LC it is worth checking this even if you don't go off road because the water from puddles can get up there.
I'm going to see about replacing the filter and extending the filter this weekend - I'll let you know how I get on.
Cheers,
Julian

Hi Julian,
While on the subject of fuel tanks, when filling with diesel, do people find
that fuel spits back up the filler neck, forcing you to slow the rate of
delivery from the pump?

Hi Y'all
No, I don't get that fuel filling splash thing.
But there is a big suck noise when I take the cap off. Maybe my breather is blocked?!

Hi Anthony
It sure does and you get angry looks from people waiting not knowing that
you may be filling up with 80 litres and the last few litres are always the
hardest, they just dont understand we need to get the last drop in so we can
calculate our mileage and see if any thing is going wrong with our babies.

[TECH] 80 [CARGO BARRIERS]

Hi Guys
Yes its me again with another question.
I have been looking at a reasonable way to get a removeable cargo barrier
for my cruiser but it seems very expensive just for a piece of wire.
Do any of you know where to get one for less than the milfords one, would a
steel work shop be able to make one or am I dreaming again.
Its just thoughts of France are coming up again and with that are the
thoughts of a boot full of wine to last a long while.
Thanks

John,
It's a RPA is it not? I wonder if it is a fault like a collapse in the
delivery tube or some thing like that. Some supermarket pumps just keep
clicking all the time and it takes an age to fill. It is always a little
embarrassing as you say when your trying to brim it and the queue of
twitching drivers gets longer by the minute.

Hi guys,
You should see the faces of those twitching drivers after you are
finished with 260 litres in the tanks:)

It sounds like your breather is blocked.
The pump struggles enough so well worth checking out.

No thanks I think I would be run over long before 150 litres, unless it was
an old lady then I might stand a chance if she was on cruches with one leg
and was half blind.

I always try to fill the LC on the lorry side of the pumps - the pumps
tend to be quicker and you don't have to stand there holding the
nozzle.
I think the splash back problem is actually down to an issue with the
pump, unless you have some venting/breather issue with you tank.

Julian,
I used to fill with the trucks when I have a LR 110 but my 80 filler neck
does not seem to accept more than a 1/2 throttle of the supermarket pump.

I wonder if it is a venting issue then, as far as I can tell there are several venting pipes including one going to the filler neck that might be worth checking.

Matt,
Your breather is blocked. This once happened to me on a car and
it cost a fuel tank, it buckled with the pressure.
If you take a piece of wire in to the fuel station, such as a
large paper clip that has been straightened, you can put it in the
pump handle, there ar a pair of holes in the side, and, 70% of the
time, the pump lock will work, so you don't have to hold the pump
trigger in.
Regards, Clive.
