I have just been reading some emails about GPS use etc. I have never used a GPS, but did a 5 month trip from Cape Town to Ethiopia using the MapStudio African Road Atlas which we found invaluable and quite comprehensive for road routes in Africe. Well worth the roughly =A312 purchase price. It may not be much help going offroad in the middle of the Sahara, but for 90% of the trip it's so easy to pick up, browse through and use to plan routes, and there's nothing to go wrong...
