Hi, I’ve got this 100 series and love it. It’s done 485,000 Klm and still drives well only that I have a clunk when I’m driving along and I put my foot down and it clunks when going back a gear. Even when I’m just cruising and then put my foot down a little it will do it. Not all the time, just every now and then.
I have changed bushes and engine mounts but still does it. My mechanic thinks it could be transmission!
any thoughts?
appreciate any advice.
cheers

They all do that. The infamous driveline clunk. There are a whole lot of things that contribute a bit to it.

Driveshafts slip joints and u-joints not being greased - this is usually the first suggestion. Greasing them definitely helps, but at 500k, you have wear in other places too.
Over time play develops between the front axle hub splines and the CV axle splines. Hubs are cheap - ~~$20, the whole axle is expensive, but you can get only the outwards half.
Front diff bushings are a major contributor - usually the front one gets torn over time and the whole diff housing moves. Can be replaced in place, the front one could be a pain.
Rear control arm bushings.
Much more rarely - worn differentials and excessive backlash.

Again, at 500k it will be a combination or all of the above.

Hey thanks Ivan.
That really helps. We have done a couple of those things. When we put new engine mounts in it wasn’t as bad but still there and we did some bushes but I’ll check everything else before I attack the transmission.
I was told that those things you mentioned messes with people’s heads and they presume, as I did, it was the gear box.
Thanks again, really appreciate it
Kerry
