Hi Chas,
Been there, done that
You have two options:
I couldn't find any insurer other than NFU who would issue a green card for
Morocco, (and then only if you insure with them). The problem for me was
that they only insure low risk, and for some stupid reason they classed me a
higher risk because (they said) I have a European driving license.
In actual fact I think I blew it by asking too many questions (e.g. detailed
mod list) at the time of contacting the broker, combined with a stupid
broker who got it into her head that I intended to use the car for
competition (as a result of not understanding said mod list). Once I was
black-marked in their computer as having been refused once, contacting other
branches continued to turn a blank.
My solution was to give the car to my girlfriend, who insured it with NFU,
although they didn't like it that we asked for a Morocco green card straight
away as they (rightly) think you might have it double insured then cancel
the NFU insurance when you get back.
My advice would be contact an NFU local office, get the car insured, then
ask for a green card and get confirmation that mods are ok (they told us no
problem modding the car so long as it does not affect performance, my
intercooler is tuned for fuel economy rather than performance so I'm OK
BTW, NFU turned out to be cheaper than my previous insurance.
OR
Ignore the above, and get the card in Ceuta or wherever you land. The
problem with this is that the insurance offices may be shut if you turn up
very early on a Saturday morning as we did.
Getting a green card caused us (and others) so much hassle and cost (I had
to cancel my old insurance) that we really made a point to Barrie at
Waypoint that the tour should be arranged so that people can get insurance
in Ceuta or Morocco.
Barrie doesn't (or didn't last time) order the ferry tickets until the day
before the trip so you can always ask him if you can get a ferry ticket to
go over the day before, get insurance in Ceuta and then meet them there the
following morning.
If I was going again I would follow the second option, although the first is
maybe better for peace of mind and once you have done it you can get green
cards indefinitely which is easier for future trips. You can be pretty sure
that you will want to go again
Hope this helps!
Cheers,
