Bonsoir Reno
Welcome to the list and hope you enjoy your new big boys toy. Remember to look after it with a good change of fluids in the gear box, engine, diffs, transfere case. Also when you get the time look at your birfields and repack them. There is a few items that dealers and owners neglect to service and look after properly so now its up to you., this should prevent you from getting into hassle hopefully. If you need any advice just ask but maybe you will be giving the advice to others. Im sure the guys here will help if they can. Your so lucky not having to pay road tax there on the 80, I just had to pay mine today AH.

Hi Lubo
Birfields are CV joints that sit at the outer ends of your front axle and can give trouble from time to time and benifit from being cared for. They wear out over time and its a good idea to keep an eye on them. I have had to replace the two of mine because of wear and thats with out any abuse at all.

Hi John
You have changed 2 of them-how many they are and are there some of
them on the back axle?
Thanks for the answer by the way :)

Hi Lubo,
You only have two CV joints at the front (one each side).
The key thing with regards their maintenance is to make sure that the
steering knuckles on the ends of the axles are kept topped up with
grease - there is a small plug at the top front of the knuckle that you
can uncrew and then top the grease up from there. I usually try put
one or two pumps of grease in there at every service.
If there isn't enough grease in there water can get in causing rusting
and also the CV joints will wear prematurely. In theory they should
last at least 100,000 miles if looked after.
As with a few other things on Landcruisers, the CV joints tend not to
get touched by dealers unless there is an actual problem (you can tell
they are wearing due to clicking/grinding noises whilst moving
forward/backward with the steering wheel at full lock).

The grease you want is molybdenum based grease. Available in the
better carparts shop.
A toyo mechanic once told me the birfields should only be 3/4 full(you
have to know the exact amount to do this), and not fully filled as to
popular belief. This could have been some standard stealers sale talk
though...

Hi Frederik,
That's right, but when you pump it in through the filler, because it is
thick stuff it doesn't fill up like fluid, mainly it forms a small
'mountain' so filling to the plug hole provides enough grease that
settles down to about 2/4 full.
