Wondered when you'd find us Mark ;)

I have had more than my fair share of A442F gearbox woes in the past. Has the box been worked on before or this it's first time out?

What were the symptoms?
a day or so ago a leak appeared from the bell housing
but i have noticed for about 3 months that fuel consumption has been awful and
hard to explain but when cruising about 40-50mph if you were to let of the throttle in top gear
it would go into another gear and cruise at lower revs
i assume that the tc is not locking up
the oil looks fine
and carried out the od tests and all seems fine

Cheers

when you let up on the throttle and it changes up, that sounds like it locking up. If you then give it just a bit more throttle again, does it stay locked or go back to high reving? If you apply too much throttle it is expected to unlock again - the lock up friction surface isn't designed to hold high amounts of torque like a clutch just the relatively low torque of cruising so the ECU will unlock / not lock the TC if it thinks you've got your foot down. An out of adjustment or faulty throttle position sensor can make the ECU think you have your foot down when you don't or more than you have ...

The gearbox ECU is just above the brake pedal, it controls (amongst other things) the lock up solenoid in the gearbox and when I had suspected lock up problems I scotch lock'd a long wire to the lock up solenoid output from the ECU and connected the other end to a multimeter and drove like that so I could check if when there was 12v to the solenoid it felt like it had actually locked. This would help you find out if it is a case of the ECU not locking the TC because of bad sensor input or the ECU is trying to lock the TC but it doesn't happen when it should.

I would try and get to the bottom of your original fault before you drop the box if you can, at least you're able to run tests, otherwise there's the risk of fixing your leak but not the base problem and doing it all over again :|

Do you have the gearbox FSM off mudtoys?

Thanks
Jon
i cant seem to find the links of mudtoys for the fsm
i was jumping in feet first
but i can not do alot of testing as the leak is quiet bad and might be throwing me in the wrong
direction
i have spoken to quit a few gearbox people and put all the ones who want to sell me a gearbox
one person sounded like he new a bit
and said that the tc are known for wearing a thrust washer and could cause the fault
im having
does this sound likely?

The 100 series is known for a TC washer fault due to a supplier quality control problem, affects years 98-01, same box, wrong time period. The only thing I would say the 80 series A442F gearbox is known for is not being the best for cooling and needing some extra help with that for big tyres / towing etc.

Without seeing / feeling it myself, your symptoms suggest an electrical problem rather than mechanical but also that as you've guessed it will have been getting v hot not locking up and that can kill the seals causing your leak.

Getting the box out should be easy enough for you, I would split the transfer case off first, but once it's out then it's harder to test ideas and so you end up changing parts and crossing fingers that was it and it won't be coming out again  But if it's leaking that badly then you don't have much choice. You should at least be able to see if it's the gearbox or TC seals that are leaking.

Unfortunately the only spare box/TC I have now is a presumed dead one from Ray that he exhanged for my good one from my old green 80! I *think* he just killed the oil pump by having a blocked oil filter, at some point I was going to rebuild it, I *think* the TC is AOK and you'd be welcome to give it a go if it would help you out.
