Hi Y'all
Just a short note to say Hi.
We are back from our Trans-Africa trip - it was fantastic.
Miranda the Overlanda was brilliant, and it is incredible what these
beasts can do in comfort.
What did I learn... take spare wheel studs, and NOT ones from a well
known 4x4 Internet supplier, as their ones dont fit.... Get Genuine
Toyota, because it costs less in the long run.
I have a RBGAN sat dish, like the one below. It is working and all I
would like is =A3100 for it. (new =A3299)

Well done!
I'd say its shock horror being back. No zebras or elephants on the way
to work in this part of the world.
You've got a great website and a good diary - which I'll be reading over
the next while - your planned route is pretty much the same as mine so
will learn a few things from your experiences! What the hell happened to
make 6 wheel studs sheer off I wonder?? I'd say it was a fright to see
the wheel fly down the road like that.
Would you recommend one of those sat dash things? Did it work well?
Would be interested to know how you pay for credit and call time.
Would it be up for another trip south???

Interesting indeed.
But the RBGAN service will be stopped in December 2008. So, two things :
1/ If your trip is going to be longer, don't get one
2/ As the service is going to be stopped you can get them for free, you just
pay the airtime.

Hi and welcome aboard.
I'm interested to know the origin of your car, I didn't know that Toyota
sold any diesels in Canada or the US.
The list seems to be exceptionally quiet at the moment (where is everyone?),
but hopefully the others will wake up and chip in - we have some good
seasoned travellers on the list who have travelled in most countries of the
world so plenty of experience to draw upon

It seems I have missed one of the bulletins, as I have not seen the original
post...
It is pretty quiet here at the moment....

Canada received diesel Land Cruisers direct from 1979, starting with the
BJ40 then the BJ42, in 1984 this changed to the BJ70 and the BJ60,
followed by the HJ60.
Since the late 1990s a steady stream of Japanese market trucks have been
imported privately.
The Canadian market was never directly offered the 80 series from Toyota.

Hi, Been on here a short time now and converted from Landrover
Discovery in November 2008 to an 80 Series Landcruiser - Now fitted
with Hannibal roofrack, Howling moon Rooftent, TJM 2" suspension lift.
Still need to source/fit snorkel - can't decide between a branded make
or have a stainless one bent to shape, Compressor - just need to
decide where to fit it, and organise storage for proposed overland
trips.

Hi - everyone - not being shy at all, just saying hello. I was at the ELCO
weekend, good fun. Been into cars/BMW's/LR/Nissans4x4/Clan Crusders/Talbot
Sunbeams - Lotus/BRM etc - now with 80 series - black with some toys on it -
planning to travel around Morocco with Paul... done a Welsh weekend. Need to
prep the inside of the car - currently looking for job so the LC is on hold
- although resolving a few issues at the moment. Good to see all the LC's
at the ELCO weekend - and how people have prepped their vehicles - Regards
to all - Denis - (and Roman I haven't forgotten the mail address that I
owe you for the 'carbon guy')

I'm new to the list, so thought I would introduce myself.
I am looking to do a trip from the UK to Asia in the next few years
and have decided that an LC is the vehicle to do it in. So i am
looking at an 80 series diesel. So first question, is there a good
buyers guide around that details the areas I need to be aware of when
looking at them?

Hi. A customer of mine is selling his 1995 (not 1996) 4.2 Turbo Diesel 80.
The vehicle is here (in Derbyshire) with me. He's out of the country!
It's just (end October 2009) passed it's MOT and is ready to go!
Eric (my customer) did a three year 80,000 mile trip through Africa with
this vehicle. It's now on 193,000 miles.
It's in good shape and goes really well.
The kit is has,

OME steering damper
150 litre extra fuel tank
Rear draw system
Engle fridge

It also comes with plenty of bits and pieces, like Specter jerry cans, a
Specter water jerry can, some spare parts, some tools and recover equipment
etc..
There are one or two little things that need doing to it, like
shovel mounting bracket broken
second fuel tank gauge not working
rev counter not working
Air con not working
wheel arch extensions broken off!
front and rear diff locks not working
It's due for a service and one CV joint could do with being replaced.
Because the vehicle was out of the country for so long it had to be
'exported', this means that it need to be reregistered by the new owner.
This is very easy to do, you just need insurance, the MOT and you have to
pay to tax it for one year.

Hi and welcome,
This is probably the best place to ask, there is no buyers guide.
The 80 was sold in the UK until Mar. 98. There are a few basic choices
to make before you look. The first is do you want an import or not, in
your case it probably won't matter as you are going abroad. An import
lacks some of the UK stuff, impotantly diff locks, but has its own
extras (mine is an import). You have already made the Petrol/Diesel
choice. Are you looking for Three rows of seats?, are you looking for
leather seats? Do you prefer auto or manual?

Slee Offroad has a buyers guide for the US, that doesn't cover diesel
spesific issues. Covers years 91 to 97. Here:
