Dyfed, you mentioned 4Runners and are they good.
They are very very good.
They are the saloon version of the Hi-Lux, and you know the reputation of
those.
Although not sold In Europe any more cos they are overtaken by the
Prado/Colorado/'LandCruiser' model(s). They are still made, and if you
watch TV news and see UN peacekeepers anywhere you will see that they are
the UN's standard vehicle for peacekeeping forces.
The 80 has a Hino truck engine and gearbox, whereas the 4R has a more
'light' engine and a car derived gearbox. It is much sweeter to drive than
the 80 with a beautiful manual box. It also has good ground clearance and
as much room between the seats as an 80.
I enjoyed my 4Runner (again ex UN surplus) except for one thing. It was an
older model with the 2.4 N/A engine which is a right dog. By all means go
for a 4R but with the (4cyl) 3l turbo diesel, that is the engine they put
in the new light 'Landcruiser' model. They did put a turbo variant of
lesser capacity in it and - I think the 2.8 turbo - maybe the better of
those less than 3litres.
The later engine model also has coil springs all round. The earlier ones
had torsion bars along the chassis and they soon got shot if on rough going
- though Milner sell them at a good price.
I have a mate in Tring with a Jap import 4R that is about a 1990, but it
has a small but turbo engine. He is just happy with the power, but it has
all the bells and whistles, electric everything and even colour coded seats
and carpets.
If I had to buy another Toy tomorrow I would be happy to look at the 4R as
well as an 80.
Cheers
