Hi

The engine light just come on, I am about to book it into Toyota Bromley, but can anyone recommend a garage that's SE London.

Is there anything I can check?

Its a 2005 120, done 51,000 miles.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Gary

did you check the VIN against the injector seal recall ?

I am not far from you, and havent found anyone local'ish who knows what they are doing; Toyota Bromley is slightly better than Jemca in Sidcup, but i suspect its a case of who you get...

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I did a check a while back, the was no recall for my vehicle.

I just done a 30 day, 6,500 mile trip round Norway and Sweden. There was 2 mornings where I put my foot down and there was no power. It cleared and its never happened again. Both times, it happened just after starting the engine and starting off. Was this a Sign?

A leak in vacuum pipes can give you a check engine light .

unsure, could be.

I've lost power once while driving down the M2 east bound, turned out the batteries were dying. I've also had a problem where the engine would not start ( and the fuel filter was to blame ). Mine's a 05 LC5 with 130k on the clock.

w.r.t the lost power - sounds more like a drivetrain problem or an electrics than an engine one - i guess you've had the fluids etc all checked through recently etc ?

I'm waiting for them to call me back, when I called them, they were unable to transfer the call, had a problem with there telephone system. Not a good start ;)

Hi

I had a full service done last May. I wanted it checked over before going on my trip.

Hello
Does it drive as normal with the engine light on?

Ok.
One of the many sensors has detected a fault. The ecu is letting you know by showing the check light.
I believe if the fault was not safe to drive on the ecu would put the car into limp mode.

Obviously the fault code now needs to be read and the fault the rectified.
Any Toyota garage, Toyota independent specialist, or even the usual fix any car garage will be able to read the fault codes quickly.

Hope this helps. Engine check lights make your heart thump..

Just talked to Toyota,

As its an amber light, its still ok to drive. I'm booked in for next Thursday for a check.

I might see if a local garage can have a look before then.

Great news.

Yes local garage should be able to read codes very quickly, and it may be a simple cheap fix. Often is.

Might be worth getting yourself a fault code reader ? Not too pricey and will give you an idea of what’s going on even if you don't want to fix it yourself.

Problem is OBDII readers dont work on early 120s. Certainly not 2005 and earlier. You need techstream software. That's not big deal though. But even without that you can get the codes out by connecting pins 13 and 4 of the socket you plug an OBDII type reader into. It's under the dashboard, almost behind the little fuse box by your right knee.

Switch the ignition on first and wait 60 seconds. Then connect the pins. You get 1 or more fast indicator flashes (this is your first digit), then a half second pause and more flashes, and so on. This is your fault code number. If there are multiple faults you get a 2.5 second delay and then more flashes.

It is much easier with a reader, but you can do it if you need to.

I thought that all UK diesels had to be OBD2 compliant from 2004.

I've heard that too. Mine is an 05 plate, but shows up as a 2004 model on toyodiy for the chassis number. I have an OBDII reader and it doesn't work. Techstream is fine though. I think there were 2002 manufacture dates on the earliest 120s. Be interested to know if someone has one OBDII works on and know what year it is.
