Hydraulics, Winches and pumps

I thought the PS pump flow rate was just lower and so the winch runs
slower? Mine certainly goes very slowly but on the other hand has
enormous power.
I'd like a separate or up rated pump for the speed but can't see where
it would fit. The PS pump is gear driven on my HDT's so I'm not sure how
easily you'd fit an up rated pump but it would be a good solution.

It's a bit quiet here, so here is technical topic to ponder...
I have just been thinking about hydraulic winches and the
recommendation that you should fit a separate pump because the power
steering pump doesn't provide enough power.
As Roman has experienced, once you start adding extra pumps along with
other ancillaries like air compressors things get pretty tight under
the bonnet and also the routing of the belts in order to provide enough
grip on the pulleys gets tricky.
So, rather than fitting an extra pump, why not upgrade/replace the
existing pump with one from something like a lorry tractor unit that is
used to steer two axles?
This would save space and reduce the belt problems.

Jon,
Have you thought about running the pump from the PTO? I once made enquiries
about this and had some replies suggesting it is quite possible to achieve,
althought the PTO module is rather costly.

Not really. I suppose their winch is even more expensive being a Toyota badged
product. Although I have no specs or the winch I guess it's a lower pulling
power than MM H12.
