Evening all
Ive just been to see a landcruiser!
It's a j-reg vx diesel in red.
114k on the clock
Looks mint inside and out, bit of rust on the chassis (surface not through
the body!) but other than that its what I want!
Only thein is that the spare wheel is in the boot not under the car, ive had
a quick look underneath and it looks broken (the thing to hold the spare on)
Also its got 31 .... 15's on alloys (the dots mean I cant remember what the
size is exactly)
As the spare was in the boot I couldn't see the size exactly so I guess it's
a 16
So my question (s)
Are:
1. how much of a faff is it to get proper lc alloys or even steels?
2. whats the beef with the spare under the car, im ok with storing it in the
boot
3. is having the older one with drum brakes ok or are they to be avoided?
Oh incidentally its got a chrome bullbar and spots which are the same colour
as the body (factory fitted maybe?)
Oh its got a pants looking sony head unit, so I might haggle that and get
mine out and put it in the lc.
Other than that, oh and haggle the price (5.5k) I "hopefully" will be a
proud owner by the end of the weekend
UNLESS he sells it
Im part ex-ing to and the guy knows it and is prepared to do so

Dyfed,
The price seems to be OK, but the drum brakes are not a bonus. I'm not
sure how much it would cost to have them converted to disks. Also, I'm
a bit concerned by the rusting chassis.
Manual or auto? Has it got axle lockers?
Alloys /steel rims can be bought/ exchanged. (ca 200 - 250). The spare
tyre winch under the chassis is know to break down if not regularly
maintained.
Any clonks in the drivetrain, smoky engine?

I've bought and sold a few sets of wheels on ebay, sold a set today in
fact, so that's always a good bet if you keep an eye on it. Maybe the
person who bought mine will be selling a set.
The spare mount may be salvageable with lots of cleaning, greasing and
patience. If not you can have the one that used to be on my 94 IF I
haven't thrown it away which I don't think I have. Keeping the spare in
the boot robs you of a lot of space and with a 2 inch lift and bigger
tyres it doesn't really get in the way slung under the back.
Drums on the rear is not ideal, they struggle to work after being dipped
in mud a few times but getting at them to clean them out is easy so not
the end of the world. For your budget a nice condition older motor like
that may be a better bet than a well worn newer one.
Best Regards,
Jon.

Which is my thoughts exactly
The motor looks v good inside and out
Ive attached pictures of it, taken with my spv 500 phone.
The spots look colour coded too or is that a coincidence.
Also spotted the din blanking plate is screwed on so I guess this isnt a
toyota fitting but a diy job
My plan is to fit the stereo in the first gap and the cb in the 2nd.
Also
A 15" tft on ebuyer is 110 quid
A 7" touchscreen is a lot more...
Nuff said, just need to know where to mount the screen now :)
Thing is this may be empty talk as it may be sold by Saturday morning
If not its haggle time

I can't think were else you could mount a 15" screen, I'd spend the
extra and have the 7". Better still (but much more money) there's a 7"
VGA touch screen fold away that fits in a DIN slot available now on
linitx, think that's what I'll put in Stephs, stereo in one slot, screen
in the other.

Jon.

good point
will have a look and see the damage (financial!)
thing is until the car is in my hands this may be all talk anyway!
but here's being optimistic

Hello guys,
What's this for? Watching telly in the car? Navigation?
Do you need special software to use touchscreen isntead of a mouse?

from what i can gather the touchscreen uses USB and it replaces the mouse in effect
although you can have the on-screen keyboard so you can type stuff in but maplin
sell a compact keyboard/mouse combo, (like a laptop layout) which is also ideal
for the navigation
no it aint for watching telly its for navigation but the monitors for din
fitting cost too much for me so the cheap alternative is to buy a 8" tft or
something and get a touchscreen overlay (links on jon's website)

or
Dyfed,
So what other hardware do you use it with for navigation? Which
software do you run on this hardware? What's the advantage of over a
small notebok, like a Thinkpad 240 series, or a PDA. or a smart phone?

ive been given a dell latitude cpi which has 128mb of ram and is a 233 iirc
it aint great but it works
ive got mappoint 2004 running on it and i took delivery of my gps receiver today
which works perfectly with it
the reason for having a screen instead of the laptop on the dash is the space
taken up.

Hmmm, I was concerned I just bllinked andf missed the on-board
navigation revolution! Then I'll stick to my setup - notebook for
scanned maps, Psion V with TomTom Navigator for Europe and Nokia 6600
/ Bluetooth GPS with TomTom Mobile 5 (when it's released) for day to
day UK navigation.

Hi Roman,
Questions, Questions Questions!!!
The latest ITX motherboards are pretty compact so you can build yourself
a PC that can be hidden away within the dash/glovebox/under a seat.
Once you have the PC installed, and have attached a GPS, you can then
run things like Memory Map providing OS level mapping,
AutoRoute/MapPoint Europe for normal road mapping (there is a module for
voice instructions if you want).
The main area of development at the moment is towards entertainment with
so people are using them for playing MP3s, you can radio tuner cards,
CDs (you can get cases that fit in the 2 din stereo slot), web access,
etc.

You want VGA input (picture is crap on composite) and touch screen,
trust me. Without both of those your enjoyment will be seriously
compromised and you'd be better going for a different solution IMHO.
Have you looked at the forums on www.mp3car.com ? They have plenty of
info to digest on this subject.
Best Regards,
Jon.
