injector pump

Hi Guys
A while back Julian advised me on what to do to correct the vibrations i am
having when the cruiser is put into drive.
I either deleted it or filed it somewhere so safe now I cant even find it.
Something at the rear of the injector pump to adjust the fuel intake, it
even had a name.
Could someone please remind me what i am looking for, (is it a nut, screw),
and where it is or if someone has a pic that would be even nicer.
I have reached the end with the vibrations and either I can correxct it or
ill have to bring it back to the pump guy who fixed it.
I would like to avoid doing the latter as its a good two hour drive each
way.
cheers

Hi John,
Here is the original message:
It's called the load volume screw and is from memory positioned just
above the point at the back of the pump where the fuel is distributed
to the injectors.
The screw has a 6mm hex head as well as a flat cut in it for a
screwdriver and is locked by a 12mm nut (hidden from view).
ISTR that you turn it clockwise to increase the fueling and
anticlockwise to reduce the fueling. Only adjust in 1/4 or 1/8 of a
turn increments and make a note of exactly what changes you make each
time so that you can keep track of it.
Typically your engine will require 13-14 cc of fuel for each squirt at
around 2000rpm - half a turn on the Load Volume Screw is equivalent to
3cc of fuel - so the key is to only do very small turns at a time.
I suggest that you tweak it, then take it for a run up a local hill
watching carefully for smoke out the back and then tweak again until
you strike the balance of a little bit of smoke under hard acceleration
or driving up hill, but nothing noticeable when driving normally on the
flat.
If you don't get the 90 degree exhaust pipe at the back it will be
difficult to spot without someone driving behind you monitoring it.
Another thing to note, you obviously need to do the smoke test when the
engine is warm and also you may well find that the tickover revs
increase a bit as the engine becomes properly fuelled.
A local injection company actually suggest intially adjusting the
fuelling to the point where the tickover has risen to it's highest
point and then work from there to adjust for smoke.
Generally whiteish smoke means under fuelling and black smoke indicates
over fuelling.
Also note, when you do the adjustment, hold the LV screw tightly in
position when you tighten up the locking nut, otherwise it will move.

Hi Julian
I had a look for this load volume screw, but was unsure if I had found it so
i went up to the pump guys.
I had a chat with them as you do and explained the problem with the
vibrations etc when its put in gear.
They said they would adjust the revs and that would be that.
When asked how he would do this he said with the idle adjustment screw.
i told him I had done all that and had no success.
I asked if it could be the load volume screw.
He said the pump did not have one of those load volume screws.
I asked if he was sure and he said yes it did not have one.
So now I dont know what to do other than leave it into him again as he
suggested, which is a real pain
Any ideas
cheers

Hi John,
Well that sounds like complete b****cks to me - OK, he may call it by
another name, but it is there for adjusting the fuelling.
Yes, usually you would adjust the idle speed, however your problem is
that when set to the correct idle the power isn't sufficient to maintain
it at roughly the same revs so the idle speed drops to a level where the
engine starts to vibrate.
Bearing in mind all the other tests you have done on the car, the only
thing left to check is the fuelling.
If I remember in the morning I will take a photo of where the adjuster is
and then you can take it from there.

Hi Julian that would be great.
Its a real pain when I come across guys who wont do as they should.
I know its only about 50 miles away to this place but it may as well be 150
miles.
It takes over an hour an a half or two hours because of the trucks, tractors
etc, when you cant pass.
Also there is only one bus to this place or out of it a day and it goes into
Dublin (2 hours) and then another 2 hours to get home.
cheers

Hi Julian
I left the cruiser into Toyota today because of one of these noises that i
keep hearing like a door hinge that has no oil on it.
But as usual they could find nothing wrong.
Anyway I asked them to look and adjust the fuel to the injector pump and
they refused becaue the pump guy who fixed it has it sealed so he knows if
someone was messing at it.So in a way im glad I didn't mess with it and need
to go back to him at a later date as I would have been screwed.
I now have to go to them to get it fixed again to keep the warrenty from the
first time they fixed it.

Hi John,
If that is the case have you considered talking to the injection chap about the vibrations and tweaking the fuelling levels - I would be interested to know what he thinks about it.
Also, one other thing that occurred to me the other day, is your aircon on when you get the low revs at tickover?
Cheers,
Julian

Hi Julian
It was him (the pump fixer guy) who I travelled up to the other day for 1
and a half hours each way that said all he could do would be to adjust the
idle nut.
He experienced the vibrations for himself.
So it looks like I will have to go back up and wait or get a horse and cart
back. But armed with your pic this time.
I dont have the luxury of AC so its not that.
Ill bet your right when you say its the trottle adjuster (load valve)being
different from the idle adjuster.
thanks

Hi Guys
Is it difficult to take an injector pump off and replace it with another.
What would I need to have with me besides a prayer book and a swear jar.
cheers
john 92HDJ 80 1HDT

HI John,
It is a reasonable job, you need to remove the fan, cambelt, etc as well as all the pipes to the injectors.
As well as the normal tools you will also need some pullers, some fancy spanners to deal with the IP pipes and finally a SST for setting the timing when the pump is refitted.
Cheers,
Julian

John,
Julian forgot a question. Are you replacing it with the same kind of pump?

Hey Clive
I have a few choices now that I didn't have.
When they (the two companies) here could not fix the issue and completly
washed their hamds of the IP problem I was left in a difficult situation
I could live with the violent vibrations from the engine at times or buy a
new IP.
So I chose to live with it because I found it difficult to buy a secondhand
one.
Now I have the choice of a secondhand one, so I would presume the newer IP
would be the same as mine.
Do I have a choice in what one I can fit.
Niall also very kindly offered to take his IP off and put on my cruiser to
finally prove its the IP that is faulty.
But I dont think we could do it properly.
I cant/wont go back to the guys around who did /didn't do mine, way too much
heartache.
If I buy secondhand , will it work, I dont know, who to take off mine and
fit the other one.
A new one is not possible.
So thats it still ------.
Cheers

Hi John,
How much is the second hand one and where is it from?
If you can let me have the VIN of the donor vehicle I can check to see if the pump is the same.
Cheers,
Julian

Hey Julian
The number is 22100-17141 VE6-121800RND778
096-000-7780-7011M00024.
Now thats what he told me but seems very long and its ?250 but there are
others.

Morning John,
Those numbers don't make much sense - are you sure the pump is from a 1hd-t?
Having had two firms look at the pump I still doubt that is where the problem lies.
If you are going to take the pump out - your =A3250 would be better spent getting your existing pump stripped and rebuilt by RVS in Swindon.
Cheers,
Julian

Hey Julian
Not sure at all what its from as I have to go by what he told me.
That would seem to be the pump number.
I had my IP number once upon a time and that was a problem as its not on the
pump itself.
The last time I asked about these vibrations a good while ago I was told it
did happen to others and it could be about a little spring.
I honestly dont know what else it could be as it only came in after the
initial repair to the IP.
I dont want to be throwing money at this and thats why i have lived with the
vibrations since.
If the second place had the opt out clause because they blamed the first
place sure whats to stop the third place from doing the same.
See it seems no matter what i do I can be out a lot more money and still
have the problem.
cheers

hi guys
will an injector pump from any 80 series fit any 80 series, is there a
difference between the 12v and the 24 or the years.

Hi John,
Unfortunately there were a few variations between the injection pumps -
12 and 24 valve engines certainly aren't interchangeable using different
injectors operating at different pressures, etc.
If you look in the parts catalogue they list multiple pump 'assemblies'
for the 1HD-T engine, however the injectors have remained the same on
the 12 valves and operate at the same pressures so I assume the core
pumps are the same and it is just the ancillaries that have changed.

Julian
