Sorry, about as fair as your expected me to know any Norwegian writers beyond Ibsen.
Horace Rumpole is a fictional barrister (lawyer) invented by a man called John Mortimer. He always defends, never prosecutes, and generally sticks up for the oppressed.
He always refers to his wife, Hilda, as "She Who Must Be Obeyed" (or SWMBO for short), because she is always telling him off; and the expression has passed into the English language - an example of life imitating art!
In this instance I was referring to the difficulty of persuading my wife that spending =A3xx00 on my car would be worthwhile. She is not mechanically-minded, and the benefits of improved torque and economy would not impress her, not least because she only rarely drives it.
However Julian, a married man well versed in the difficulties of persuading the fairer sex to tolerate extravagant behaviour (sorry J!), has suggested that I play up the advantages of a week in Amsterdam. This, together with a suitable quantity of freesias and chocolate, and perhaps a promise to accompany her round various ancient buildings and gardens *may* do the trick.
I regret that my experience of Norwegian ladies is extremely limited, in fact zero. But I rather suspect that they may not be so different to their UK counterparts when it comes to restraining their husbands' expenditure!
Or, in plainer English, I will have to convince my wife.
Christopher

|You've missed out one important factor: isn't SWMBO (=3D Hilda Rumpole =3D
|She Who Must Be Obeyed) a factor of life in Norway?
