Merely fitting the intercooler and doing nothing else would be of little benefit.
However, fit the interccoler, turn up the boost, increase the fueling and preferably with a freeflowing exhaust, you will get better performance and economy. I had my 4Runner 3.0 turbo diesel intercooled, after fitting a freeflow exhaust, and it was considerably improved.
And yes it is good to see somebody try something that you have advocated and for them to be pleased with the result - so I am happy !!

Hey Gareth
I still could not pull the blind down, id be a nervious wreck, worrying
about the temp all the time.
But then thats just me.
When the big end bearing went in the engine and this guy fixed it, I always
remember the one thing he said to me which was to make sure the engine is
cool and that most problems with engines are as a result of heat.
That heat can build up in the engine and you would not know unless its
extreme and shows up on the dash temp dial.
After spending all that lovely money on that one repair im very hesitant in
helping the engine to heat up and possiblilly stay warmer than it should
usually.
I know it has been said that the engines are over cooled and take account of
using them in very hot conditions or hot countries.
But I still think with the blind down the temp of the coolant must be hotter
than it would be if the blind was up and had all that breeze blowing in
through the Rad.
Maybe in my next life ill be less cautious.
But when you get lumped with a hugh bill you get very edgey of all things.
