Hi all.
I am Theo Marx from Cape Town RSA.I drive a 1999 105 1HZ TLC.

I am looking at turbo charging my rig and came across All American
Imports who offer a kit for my truck. Has anybody got some experience
with them and/or their kits? Any info/advice will be much appreciated.

Best regards.

Hello Theo,
Welcome to the list.
As for AAI, I have been using them for some years now and am very
satisfied with the stuff they sell and their expert advice.

Hi Theo

I'd think very carefully before turbo charging a standard 1HZ. I've
heard of too many people in South Africa (including close friends) who
went the turbo route on the 1HZ, were very happy for approx 60 000km and
then blew their engine. Bottom line is the 1HZ was not designed to
handle the additional heat/pressure caused by the turbo, resulting in
the melting of valve seats which leads to engine failure (as muphy would
have it, it normally happens in a beautiful, very remote area), which in
turn leads to a very expensive engine overhaul (plus the additional
charges to remove the turbo...)

In Southern Africa the problem of overheated valve seats are compounded
by the high speeds driven on the highways. In Europe one seldom gets
the oppurtunity to exceed 100 to 120km/h, which is perfect for diesel
engines. In South Africa it's the norm to cruise for hours on end at
140km/h+ and this is bad news for any turbo diesel 4x4 (even standard
turbo diesels)

I'll probably be swamped by people disagreeing with me, but my approach
is: if the engine was designed without a turbo, leave it that way. If
you need more speed/power, either convert to a petrol engine, or fit a
standard turbo diesel.
