Hey JB, have a look at your front left brake caliper. If it has thrown a
bolt it can ding on the inside of the wheel for a bit before it gets
towards a 'grinding' noise later on. But if both bolts are loose enough it
can make a rattle too. But the noise should change when you apply the
brake, try that anyway.
Alternative could be the brake pad squealer if they are worn, but they
don't 'ding' usually, they just 'squeal'.
As for the steering seal, I too have heard good things about the Lucas
anti-leak stuff.
